Watching the preparations

Free as the breeze; more than a slogan, and far from reality. Quebec is in full preparation for a departure. Sometime next week (OK, the date and time are public knowledge), some very expensive and high-tech sailboats will depart for St-Malo in France. Only an ocean away.

My tour of France

Commitment: the decision to ride in the Tour de France. Try to find another team sport that requires better than three weeks and two thousand miles of hilly highway to reach a climax. As seen from the air, the participants are dressed in jerseys that look like a collision between a rainbow and a NASCAR hood. From the ground, think of the fastest you’ve ever gone on your bicycle and accept that “those guys” would probably be faster going uphill. Not for the rest of us, the chaos of the crashing peloton.

Solid hitting

CBC reminded me  (and I’m passing it along) that today marks the 25th anniversary of Canada love-hate affair with the loonie. My kids have never known the satisfaction of earning that first foldaway dollar bill; their life involves pockets that should be double lined. On second thought, no need; given the short resting time of a typical metallic seabird in a youthful lifestyle.

Another set of patch cords

Little bits and pieces. By themselves, each one is of minor importance, but added together, I had a good day. That’s what counts, right?

In praise of the ponies

Earlier this week, someone at work asked if I’d seen “the show about PEI” on Sunday. I hadn’t, but I was curious. All I knew was that it had come on after Coronation Street, and it was all about horses. Easy find.

Too early to call a winner

Too early to call a winner (half time just ended), but the Super Bowl is underway. Sunday for the rest of us. Just think;  hundreds of millions of fans, even if only for today. When you don’t have a preference for one club over another, does that mean that you should be disqualified from watching? Didn’t think so. Besides, for a large part of the nation, the advertisements (today we got the real ones) and half time show are important.

Should I stay or should I go?

Grey Cup Sunday, where the hope is that  the half time show will be memorable. Call me “old school”, but I miss Guess Who. Today, I paid my money and all I got in change was a Nickelback. In these inflated times, that doesn’t buy me much. Seriously, trying to please the nation is difficult, but in future, could the organizers try a little harder. I’m not going to go to sleep satiated after that waste of airtime. In kindness, only every second song sounded the same.

I’m still confused, but I understand

Maybe there is a need for CSI. In NB, a man was found dead in his field, full of holes. His herd of deer were seen nearby. No, dear, not bullet holes. Antler holes. Did anybody think to interview the bystanders? I didn’t think so.

The great autumn putaway

Around my house, autumn stands for “take down and put away”. The pool and its paraphenalia. The family yurt (not really, but I’m lost to identify what else in history looks like a tent but lives beside my house). The various shovels and rakes and dutch hoes and other tools that stand for a green lawn among all the others.
