Sometimes old is better

Technology is fun. Old technology is funner.

Put away your grammar book. I am quite capable of conjugating the comparative in a traditional sense. I choose not too. End of discussion. Now, back to my original premise. I’ve been playing with electronic stuff for a long time, and there’s been a shift in the technique, even if the result is the same. Turn on radio. Listen.

Put up or shut up, sayeth the minister

Finally, the gloves are off. After months of accusatory rhetoric from a former cabinet minister, the premier has told him to “put up or shut up”. In parliamentary terms, that’s raw.

Good intentions for Day One

Rather than weight my spirit with intentions, I’ve opted to start the new calendar with an action. Translated, I have decided to dig into my pile of projects and actually complete one, today. No sense saving up for a century worth of afternoons if I’m not likely to last past the first ninety-nine.

The modern five and dime

Ah, the wonder of the five and dime. Try that line on your children and they’ll be convinced that you’ve come in via time travel, but the same hodge podge and degree of quality is still out there. Locally we refer to such bazaars as the Dollarama; your local label will vary. Sometimes, the best solution is the cheap one.

Plans, promises and the light at the end of that tunnel

Finally, an understanding medical study. It would appear that my rarely seen toes are a sign of health. I’m sure that there will be rebuttal within weeks, but for now I’m basking in my newfound chances of living just a little bit longer. The idea of a diet will remain just that; an idea.

Shining the keys

The guy at the trophy store helped me out today. I have a small collection of Morse keys that need something more substantial for their respective bases, and he managed to find a half-dozen rectangular polished pieces of marble for a price that was better than fair. In his business, these are the foundation of something much larger. After all, who wants to be recognized as the “World’s Best” with a trophy mounted on cheap plastic.

An evening at the orchestra

The pleasure of a good live concert shouldn’t be underestimated. After a long week at work, and a long session at the hospital, I didn’t have the fire in my belly to go out this evening, but… son #3 was to be onstage, doing his part. I don’t hear him in performance very often. So, we saddled up the horses and rode into town.

Foam, football and another antenna

There are larger worries in the world, but right now the primary one in my near circle is that the crema is missing. I’ve decalcified and degreased and tested and rejected (a half jar of ground beans), but the answer is not clear. What will we do if the machine has developed a mechanical flaw?

New old toys

We’ve come a long way since the time of Marconi. I’ve been known to risk RF burns for about three decades now, and I grew up with the clicks of telegraph sounders, so fist-powered communication is nothing new. My own children have heard CW, without ever understanding “what” was being said spelled out in plain language. This evening, though, I showed a bug” to one of the frequent visitors and sent a simple ID. His reaction: “Cool! It’s like scratch“. I’m officially from a far distant place and time.
