Contemplations of the idle rich

One of the world’s wealthier citizens has suggested that the rich should give half of their wealth to charity. Phew! The government already gets more than half of mine, so I now have one more reason to wish that I was rich(er). It’s all in the point of view, right?

Blame in on bean futures

It could be called classic behaviour. First, the “pusher” gets you “hooked”. Then, once he “owns you”, up goes the price. Call it retail if you wish.

Buying a bit more stow space

For over a year now, we’ve been van-free. After careful analysis, we realized that the need for seven seats and sliding side doors had disappeared. A question of changing demographics.

Cheap water

Don’t trust the label, at least when it comes to bottled beverages. The FDA has taken umbrage with certain national firms and their claims. In particular, green tea.

Why not fake out the forces of might?

The fences are in place. Toronto is prepared to emulate Quebec, come next weekend.

I’m not going to be there. The system is prepared; not one shout of protest will be heard by the “deciders”, and come Monday next we’ll have a few bad memories and not much else to show for the publicly funded party. Oh, there’s a paltry billion dollars that will have bought some toys and padded the overtime cheques of a large number of police officers; chump change.

Paid no taxes

Perhaps I’ll have to accept that things are going well; on the only day of the season where my local camping supply store offers to absorb “both taxes”, I went for a wander and couldn’t think of anything I really wanted to buy.

Show me the money

Show me the money. Isn’t that a Cruise line? Turns out that the banking industry is singing in harmony on that one, at least in Alberta.

Getting back to your agrarian roots

An egg; proof that nature has considered all possibilities. There’s a certain pleasure in eating a fried egg. Conversely, there’s a certain terror involved in collecting that egg from its rightful owner. I remember…

Hiding your riches under a basket might work

How many people do you need to grow money? Curious question, perhaps, but after reading the latest tidbits from the agency that “takes care” of my pension fund, I’m in the need to know. Over the last few years, investment funds have not been very efficient at the only task on their to do list. Oddly enough, despite the large number of professionals that dedicate their days to the job at hand, the percentage of return has been in the negative percentage range.

Finally, some equality for shoppers

Does anyone else take offence from the wailing and gnashing of teeth going on in the driven world of Canadian companies that export? For the second time in recent history, our currency is running at very close to parity with the US dollar, and to hear them (can you avoid it?), the world is at an end because they don’t have as much “selling power” when it comes to cross-border sales. Suck it up! Why should I be forced to subsidize your bottom line, forever and ever amen?
