Contemplations of the idle rich

posted in economy |

One of the world’s wealthier citizens has suggested that the rich should give half of their wealth to charity. Phew! The government already gets more than half of mine, so I now have one more reason to wish that I was rich(er). It’s all in the point of view, right?

Seriously, how much money do you need, once the basics are met? I mean, I’d like to have a different colour of credit card (that I didn’t have to abuse), and a free vacation from time to time might cheer me up. That new radio… I’m still in negotiations over that.

One of my better reads was House, by Tracy Kidder. Or as I’d subtitle it, in the style of the 18th century, In which we learn that a more expensive house has double the thickness of wallboard and not much else going for it. My next house will be in a different place, so I won’t be able to zap back and forth and compare the holes I make trying to find a stud, but you get the idea. At least my plans don’t involve something built on piles of sticks over the harbour, like the floating village I visited on Thalassa this afternoon. Apparently the kids don’t get to play on the “floor” until the age of four (in case they haven’t got their swimming skills sufficiently honed).

But back to giving away half of your wealth. GO FOR IT. Then you can try Hamburger Helper as the meal of the week.
