Economic speculation

How rich would I be if I invested six more weeks of my life? The question is rhetorical, but there’s a seed idea behind it. With just over two hundred more days to go before my intended retirement date, the idea resurfaced (this morning) of a departure in about one hundred and sixty. When I am actuarily eligible. At play; a slight reduction in revenues, for the rest of my life, in return for a few days less in the cubicle.

Income trumps excise

With a quick supper out of the way, the time was at hand. A timed, final exam. Out of ten MOOC efforts, the only one with a sudden death aspect. Some stress, sure. With a hard deadline approaching, it was “now or never”. And for the record, I managed to hold my average. Mind you, this is only 30% of the grade, but I know how I’ve done on other sections. Unless the peer markers go dancing wild on my back, I have another ribbon to hang on the virtual wall.

Spend until the last dime is gone

I work in the public sector, for now. After three decades, I’ve finally figured out what sets us apart from the private sector. We don’t believe in savings. Got a dime? Spend it, before the end of the fiscal year. That’s it. Nothing else.

Gives me a twinge

He was “just funnin’ with me”, right? When the guy on the news presented his story, I felt a sharp twinge. Maybe life isn’t as easy as I thought. War? Famine? Drought? None of the above.

Review the support and reconsider

Fixed yesterday’s problem. Reformat, and profit. On to the next emergency.

I spent some time this morning, reviewing my contacts with a particular firm over the past year. In return for $10K, we received little. Precious little. Expensive little. In light of that, the support contract is now under evaluation, with a move to a pay-as-you-go model. Not likely to involve me, long term, but I prefer when public monies are spent with due diligence.

Relying on a real teller

My offer was to fix things on Monday. And so I did. The laptop was on the desktop by starting time, and returned to its keeper by coffee time. All that I had to do was keep refreshing the “updates” screen until the problems went away. If only everything was that easy.

Is it a lazy whim?

Tomorrow, I’ll go to work. Usual thing. Been at this for a long time, and my attendance has been fairly regular. It’s a deal I make with my employer; I go in and do what is required. In return, I get paid. I’m not alone; lots and lots of people, all around the world, loan their effort in return for something of value. Much better business model than slavery, for example. Which leaves me wondering about the content on Cross Country Checkup, this afternoon.

Corporate plumage

This may be hard to believe. I just watched the finishing minutes of a marathon, not for the first time. And even with all that good example, I have no urge to run from here to there (or any other segment of  highway that measures 26.2 miles / 42.2 kilometers). Either I have remarkable self-restraint, or a good dose of middle aged common sense. Or both. Check back this time next year, and I will try to give more feedback.

Save a million and keep the cheap

Things I never had the chance to learn, before today. Let’s see: Breakfasts are the best business. People will steal your pancake recipe. Coffee goes well with anything in the morning. All of this, after five minutes with Cora (the breakfast lady).

Gifted with (bit)coin?

This is just an idea, but… there is now a Bitcoin ATM in the city. If I was to stand nearby with a needy expression, might someone gift me. Just a bit of a bitcoin. And then I could wait for the currency to skyrocket (which it does from time to time), and sell off before the downward run. No worse than buying a lottery ticket, and definitely new high-tech. I’ll wait a few days, and check the address on Google.
