Is it a lazy whim?

posted in economy |

Tomorrow, I’ll go to work. Usual thing. Been at this for a long time, and my attendance has been fairly regular. It’s a deal I make with my employer; I go in and do what is required. In return, I get paid. I’m not alone; lots and lots of people, all around the world, loan their effort in return for something of value. Much better business model than slavery, for example. Which leaves me wondering about the content on Cross Country Checkup, this afternoon.

There’s some noise about foreign workers “bumping” local residents (in the country wide sense) out of jobs. From the employee’s point of view, the government has interfered in the wrong bailiwick. The employer (in many cases) sees things from a different perspective.

People won’t work for the money offered. If they take the job, they don’t show up every day. If they can, they quit and leave the employer short-handed. You’ve probably heard the spiel.

Help me out here. Was I that unique, in going to work when I was supposed to? Did my parents leave me with unreasonable expectations about the owner/worker model? And how do people that don’t get paid manage to live? Food, lodging, toys for the dog, etc. Has the government come to the rescue of the abused owner, or have they created a class of abused workers. I want to know.

Sadly, the on air forum didn’t clarify things. While the government has agreed to take a second look at their effort, and the press decries the possibility of a ten dollar burger (assuming payment of better wages), is my urgency to retire and live on the wealth I’ve (supposedly) accumulated nothing more than a lazy whim?
