The call of the wild mac

Another  hour off my life. I blame what my met tech instructor used to refer to as “visby verbal”, or in this area, whiteout conditions while traveling on a main highway. You see, when up, down and sideways are all white, gravity is all you have left in nominal guidance. We went to town, on a bright day and came home in something that required 50% more time and 75% more mental stamina.

Banning the Canada Goose

Happened to catch the suppertime news from a neighbouring province. You know, didn’t get to the channel changer quickly enough. Anyhow, one of the news stories dealt with the reconsideration of certain amateur sporting games. Somehow, the original budget estimate of $17 million has grown,to an amazing $130 million. I don’t know how a planning group could get so far off track; usually we need the government to be involved in the actual implementation of a given project to do such a balloon trick.

The cost of sitting in the dark

All those years spent “studying” mathematics; unlike the bug beneath a looking glass, I had to try and understand the wonder before me. Oh, and wonder. Now, I apply my ability to practical situations.

No hockey for your city

In one of my favourite sports movies, Kevin Costner goes to great lengths to construct a decent ball field, based on the imagined words “Build it and he will come”. In the movie, it worked. Perhaps it has to do with baseball, though.

A massage and a comfortable bed

As someone with big dreams on a limited budget, I “get” my kicks with the help of the ‘Net. Simply put, I shop online, trying to find the best match for quality and price. I can easily pass a quiet evening surfing and looking at what the shops would sell me, if only they could. So, imagine the excitement, when I learned that son #2 was in the market for a new TV.

How to diagnose your appliance errors

Someone posted an article recently, that seemed to be satire: “How to diagnose your home appliance errors  by the sounds they make”. Sure, we’ve hear the fridge do some weird things under cover of darkness, but satire, surely.

Public service vs business

In very few situations is there a clearer difference: public service vs business. I’m referring to the current labour conflict within our postal system.

When rising waters and falling temperatures cross paths

There is a special moment in our local calendar, when the rising water table and the dropping temperatures cross. I can tell, because the sump pump starts. And doesn’t stop. There is a drain hose that freezes into a lump of uselessness, and the system just churns. I do have a work-around, involving me, a ten litre pail and patience. Just completed my workout; we should be good until either a thaw comes, or spring arrives.

New gear, albeit without operators

Not much going on. Seriously. I checked the various news sites, and  other than the usual war, famine, burned the main food store down just before winter stories, nothing inspirational. Wait, hold on… the destruction of the main supermarket in town is newsworthy, particularly when you live a thousand clicks from nowhere.

A gullibility test

“Part of me really wants to believe”. I just read through a posting that invited me to take part in a class action suit. Not my first time; the others have worked according to the rules. You send in your name, you wait, you get a cheque in the post for a token amount and life goes on. This time around, a slight twist.
