The call of the wild mac

posted in economy |

Another  hour off my life. I blame what my met tech instructor used to refer to as “visby verbal”, or in this area, whiteout conditions while traveling on a main highway. You see, when up, down and sideways are all white, gravity is all you have left in nominal guidance. We went to town, on a bright day and came home in something that required 50% more time and 75% more mental stamina.

Why did we go to town? Well, the call of the “wild mac” has been heard, recently. We decided to follow that siren song, and after a lot of retail time, we came back with a box. A pre-opened box, because that’s all there is on the shelf, this far into the holiday. And dongles…

The decision by certain laptop manufacturers to provide slimmer, lighter product was possible because the product can no longer serve without you adding back in to your sack all the ports and connection points that used to be part of the system. Oh, sure; “there’s the cloud” says the wise man in the back row. Go ahead, collect your photos from your camera via the cloud. Or connect an external hard drive, via the cloud. Ditto for that older printer that anchors the corner of the desk. Ports were first invented to allow you to work in harmony with all of your added pieces. Removing those ports and then putting them back with (extra cost) dongles is the sort of behavior that should see you chained to a rock while seagulls feast on your sweet meats. Or sweet potato fries, if you prefer.
