Cut your losses and run

An officially hot day, here. It wouldn’t be a big thing, except that the A/C in our car crapped out a couple of days ago. Parked in the driveway, or on a three minute run for milk, within reason. During a three hour round trip to the city, we had to go old style: windows open around and roofwise. The dog seemed truly confused by the fresh air.

Minimal social interaction

I’ll take it as an affirmation of my choice in a radio: one of the only sitcom programs that features a ham has just revealed their gear selection for the next season, AND WE AGREE. I mean, our budgets couldn’t be any different, but seeing the box for the new rig, and having a matching one in my basement is fun.

Hanging some air

For the last few summers, I’ve had a dream. Small, but worth pursuing. I want A/C. Cool on demand. Whatever. Knowing that our heat pump comes “ready” added to my mental gymnastics, of course. A chance to accessorize? Go for it.

Goodbye, big boxen

The shipping container for our TV had started to seem like a fixture around here. I mean, if ever I decided to ship the screen back to the Orient, as part of an attempt to achieve trade balance, it was there. But finally, egged on by the flow of other refuse out to the curb, I decided to be proactive.

Back on the pad

Although the kids plan on heading back home tomorrow, the weather has been on their side all week. Lots and lots of beach time. As well, Basin Head is now open for business, after a week plus of dredging the run. Even the dogs profited from sand and sun, although my black coated beast had less desire than his comrade.

Is it summer, yet?

Getting summer started: it doesn’t happen overnight around here. The first of the kids is down for a visit, so I did put the BBQ into the food process chain, but it was just a detail. In fact, we woke to what seemed doomed – a rainy day in paradise. Except that this is the Island, and a couple of hours later the sun moved in. Not warmly. Jackets were still necessary outside, although the lawn did get restored to lawn status (the jungle look wasn’t becoming).

At a midpoint

Look at that: the year is half over, already. I know how the first half unrolled, and now I can start wondering about the next half. Our first visitors for the summer are on the road, and the lady of the manor may head out on a road trip with our neighbour as early as tomorrow. I’m good with that, having purchased two pizzas and some fish cakes already. The dog has his own bag of chow, so I won’t be required to share.

The area has great potential

First, you make a plan. We’re at the point, after more than four years, where the basement is starting to feel unfinished. Sure, there are walls, and doors. The two windows allow us to see outside. But, that drab grey of the unpainted gyproc doesn’t give you a warm, cuddly feeling.

Adept at concealing my excitement

Knowing that the departure time is flexible keeps me grounded. And by grounded, I mean nonchalant. I’ll get my preps done; no, really, I will. Stress won’t solve anything. In fact, I’m so adept at concealing my excitement that the dog still hasn’t clued in to the impending. Soon, when my shoes are tied and his leash is in my grasp, he can start his gambols.
