A quick broom-over and then done

The moon is rising, and my task time in the basement is ending. Scheduled success. Yesterday, I managed to transfer the majority of the materials, out of the space that will (some day) be my playroom. This afternoon, the remainder. Fiddly stuff, requiring some thought. And that big (heavy) desktop will stay there, with some of the walls being built in harmony. Soon. Next week? The week after?

Efficient backfills

If ever the question is posed, “What computer game best suited you for the life you live”, I will answer without hesitation. No, it won’t be Tetris, although that will score among the favourites. Rather, I have developed my ability to live among renovations with the occasional round of Sokoban.

A get things done kind of day

Today was a get things done kind of day. But, first, we had to pamper the automobile. Oil change, done locally. Drop the car off, early. Pick it up before lunch. Along the way, the mechanic will check for other (not obvious to the untrained eye) defects. We like this kind of service, which beats the “service bay at the dealership” model. Recognizing that our car is coming up on an eighth birthday, with a comfortable 200K+ of kilometers on the odometer, it makes sense to pamper. Have you seen the price of a new car?

Our first winter mound

The universe is unfolding as it should. I learned that, a long time ago, from a rather special song that begat a poster. Anyhow, today the schools remained closed for a second day. With no urgent reason to clear the driveway, I simply waited for the big blue tractor to arrive, and it did. There was more snow down than I had estimated; we now have  one of those peculiar mounds in the front yard that would have been a source of great joy when I was younger. Now, meh.

An unplanned feast

We started the new off in a different manner; the neighbours came to supper. They had to supply part of the menu and the cooking knowhow, but we managed to seat a mixed group of six, and to have everyone leave the table satisfied. No desserts were involved.

Let’s review the facts, shall we…

Getting ready to throw away another calendar. Before that, I’ve decided to reflect on good old ’19, and see what I did that took me outside my comfort zone. There were a few firsts, and a few things I don’t foresee doing again.

Layers of conversation

In the absence of a format set of plans, our reno project depends on threads. That is , the result of multiple conversations among the involved parties. Today’s version went something like this.

Let the changeout begin

My concentration was on the work involved in requiring several dozen sewing-machine case containers. All repurposed to hold foodstuffs, and packed pele-mele on the back of a truck, beside the residence (where I worked thirty-plus years ago). Obviously, something didn’t make sense here, and the ringing of the telephone removed me from a deep sleep.

A required recovery

My premonition was realized; this morning, all of my cardboard pile was gone. Unfortunately, this was hours before the scheduled pass of my recycling truck, so I had to assume the worst. My cardboard pieces were still around, just; around the local ditches.

Planning with flexibility included

Outside, at the end of the lane, a test of opposing forces: our recycling pickup is scheduled for early tomorrow, so I’m proving proactive by piling loose sheets of cardboard and a number of oversize blue bags where the truck can access them without hazard. Here’s the catch. The winds are at gale force, and we may actually see an increase overnight. Will my materials still be there, or will I have to play ditch-fetch tomorrow?
