Let the season begin. Tonight marks the beginning of another winter interlude, where music will provide the excuse and a cast of thousands/hundreds/tens/one will work the audience. Week after week; and if schedules permit I will be there to do my part. American Idol Season Eight. Call it AI8 for short.

Inconsistent user interface. IUI. Just when you think you’ve got something under control, count on Windows to throw a curve into things. Unlike the Mac world, where consistency is Job One, Microsoft doesn’t have a game plan. Oh sure, the X in the upper right corner is useful, when things aren’t working well, but what about some of the odd choices made at Redmond for tasks that shouldn’t be difficult.

I’ve tried to find the proper analogy; farm team, summer camp, amateur night, little brother. None fit the situation for the start of yet another season of Canadian (Eh!) Idol. I mean, we know that there is a ton of talent up here in the wilderness, but any time a team from “the big town that wants to be the next American City”, aka Toronto, takes over…

Another whole year has gone by, and the night has arrived. We’ll finally confirm what we all know; the next American Idol is named David. But first, some diversion. A really big show as Ed used to say, right here on our stage. And what a stage, and what a theatre, and what a cast of thousands to watch from the choice seats (seven thousand, according to the little seafoam fellow). Let’s get started.

All over but the crocodile tears; American Idol has allowed the Final Three to show their skills to all of us at home. Even those up here in Canada that can’t vote. I tried via the home phone line, and then again via Skype; my vote doesn’t count when the American dream is at hand. Only fair I guess, because I didn’t buy any tickets to the big tour, or download any iTune content, or even purchase a small bottle of Coca-Cola to show that the dream was mine.

The yellow bar across the bottom of the TV screen was not delivering a prophecy, with the “One more contestant goes home tonight”. Some things are predestined, and last night’s edition of American Idol simply confirmed what “had to happen”. When Simon told Jason “I’d pack your bags”, after the Reggae-Lite performer first underwhelmed us with a Marley number, followed by a Dylan tune where the lyrics seemed to be optional, there was no argument from the rest of the room.

Non-linear thinking. My response to a world with too much information and too little time. This evening hockey has given way to GTA (the new one) and there’s a radio soundtrack that will need careful investigation if I can get past the gunfire and squealing tires. I’ve taken shelter with some Jelly Bellies and the weekly American Idol showdown. Even if the voting doesn’t follow the talent…

I am not a vexillologist. Therefore my impressions are probably erroneous, but based on observation, feudal times have returned. What else could explain the sudden blossom (think algal) of flags attached to the side windows of cars driven (fast) by young men wearing baseball caps (often twisted to one side)? They’re probably supporting knights who plan to go into battle.

Technology forcing revision; the story of my life. The tiny wiki that I’ve been feeding like a favourite tomato plant has been lost due to a database failure. All of the king’s horses My best efforts to reload from various backup copies have done nothing more than convince me that restoring a database is among the black arts – the theory and the practice rarely concile. A database with “minus 1749 records” is not worth very much.

I realize there’s a “rule” that states if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything. To be fair, the rule doesn’t mention posting in a blog, so I feel safe in continuing. We’re through another mentored week on American Idol. Good, we’re through; it was painful.
