No false idol need apply

posted in Idol |

I’ve tried to find the proper analogy; farm team, summer camp, amateur night, little brother. None fit the situation for the start of yet another season of Canadian (Eh!) Idol. I mean, we know that there is a ton of talent up here in the wilderness, but any time a team from “the big town that wants to be the next American City”, aka Toronto, takes over…

The budget for the Canadian Idol series is much less than the “real thing” and it shows at every level. The judges are without credibility (except for Sassy), and that’s a mouthful given the abuse aimed at SimonPaulaRandy throughout the winter. At no point did the panel show me that there was anything other than random dice rolling in the decisions about “should you stay or should you go?” The staging looked contrived, and the pacing and structure of the program which seemed to run for hours was confusing. When son #3 and a buddy wanted the screen for a round of XBox, I already had something better to do with my time.

It’s disappointing, because some of the performers DO have talent and potential. The program won’t keep me interested in knowing who wins or how; I’ll wait for an announcement sometime after the holidays have gone by, and if another Eva Avila or Kalan Porter emerges I’ll be happy for them. Meanwhile, this program gets two toes down; I’m walking away. Sad, because I like the idea of Idols, however false they might be.
