Old familiar ways
Let the season begin. Tonight marks the beginning of another winter interlude, where music will provide the excuse and a cast of thousands/hundreds/tens/one will work the audience. Week after week; and if schedules permit I will be there to do my part. American Idol Season Eight. Call it AI8 for short.
The formula has been modified, ever so slightly, like my favourite chili recipe, with the addition of a fourth “judge”, Kara DioGuardi. I have no idea how you resolve a situation where the decision is split, but it doesn’t really matter, does it. After all, once the audition weeks are over, the public become responsible. Yes Virginia, there is a public voting process. This isn’t all about Simon.
Mind, the distractions never stopped, onscreen or off. While I tried to connect a PDA to the home network, one singer tried to distract one half of the judging panel by dressing for a session by the pool. She connected, the PDA didn’t. There, we have a split decision, and the season is only hours old.
There are those who don’t watch AI; I respect their decision. For me, I’ll keep my chair in its usual place, even if I have to chase the dog away. While Randy and Paula repeat the same vapid statements, over and over again, I’ll take comfort in the familiar. Who needs stimulating material on TV, when we can simply sit back and enjoy the variety of the human voice? The program provides a lesson in geography, for a minimal of educational content.
