Eat, shop, dream

I’m not a strong believer in the “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” school of nutrition. A quick coffee and off I go to face my world. Except that, if the opportunity to have a good three egg, potato, three meat plate presents itself, why not?

Picking a fine table

Sitting over by the fire hall, I can’t help but notice that their free wi-fi now has a name that reflects the status. A change made over the last couple of days; are they getting that much traffic here in the parking lot?

Heavy bread and hidden lairs

A new exploit; we spent the whole twenty-four hour period at the campground. No quick trips down the road to see if anything had been altered during our absence. No longer excursions to the city, to see if anything… you get the general idea. Just us, a tent, some noisy crows and stealthy hares, and proof that we don’t spend our waking hours elsewhere.

In the calm of libraries

Two libraries in one afternoon; if you come on holiday with me and my gang,  prepare to do things one book at a time.

Boats and banners

Four days into the camping experience, the committment is made. Paid. There is now a date of expiration on my permit. It took time to get the calendar to agree with the wants of our party, but I can lay my head to rest knowing there won’t be a knock on the tent door with an eviction notice.

Bubbly Bake is really good

Stay in a campground long enough and you’ll find other repeat customers. I’m not always able to pull their names up from the mental Rolodex, but we are creatures of habit. That is, we try to pitch in the same little spot each season. Birds do things in a similar way.

Without walking on broken glass

A generation ago, if you saw a piece of broken bottle on the beach, the parent in charge would warn against the danger of cutting off a limb. Now, we sell that same shard as precious jewellry, in shops boasting access to “sea glass”. How times change.

Struck the tent

We started the day with a hail and farewell to the family, and then set off to the city to repair a reputation. Seems that my domain (the kind that keeps me enthralled) had been delisted.

In spite of rain

The plight of the fickle tourist can be summarized: What to do when it rains?

I accept the need for balance in the universe. Hot and cold; wet and dry. Without precipitation, the Green Island becomes the Red Island, replete with dust and a lack of shade. But, when your time is counted, measured, paid for by the minute, there’s a little voice that whines. Why can’t it rain at night, instead of during prime beach season.
