The calm after the storm

With our faithful dog at home, taking care of business, there’s been a certain void in our lives. Happily, Bill the Spaniel has stepped in as a loaner pet, and the morning now comess with a wiggler that has personality to boot.Only a temporary measure, but even smaller canines have a right to scratching behind the ears and over the tailfin.

Sand on my toes

Just back from a walk on my beach. An ownership conferred by presence, rather than a court of laws. An ownership every bit as real (and ephemeral). A title that was passed to me by the group from last week, and that I will pass to those who come after, without any need to meet or seal a covenant.

Old stones renewed

Today we put ourselves in overdrive. Lots to see, lots to do, miles to drive before we sleep, etc. Life with purpose.

Old banks and near misses

Last night offered up one kickass storm. The kind I’ve rarely sat through in decades of camping. Forget sleep; between the thunder that rocked the ground, a steady bath of rain and wind that moved some of our neighbours, we had a short time on the pillow.

Books and gee gaws and lonely lights

Overheard while standing around a campfire: the story of the house on stilts. The contractor wouldn’t give too many details, blaming omerta or some such thing, but as long as a strong wind doesn’t move the building due north it will remain one of those American follies.

Pots and pans and shopping sprees

Sitting in Casa Mia, with a delicious piece of mangoberry cheesecake and good coffee, I’m starting to appreciate this vacation thing. It helps when son #3 sends a Facebook advisory that the lawn is growing wildly. Incessant precipitation or some such thing. Not my worry.

Fast planes and faded faces

The break from left to right of a brace of CF-18 served to wake the tent from its lethargy of the early morning. First question, had our country decided to go into some strange new geopolitic changed to the obvious “What were they doing so far from home”. Such is the mindset of the serial vacationer.

Knick-knacks for the idle rich

Today could have started with a boat ride. The invitation was received by campfire post, but the impending heat and an urge to shop for the unnecessary meant that the day was spent on dry land.

Campfire chatter and clean clothes

Lots of new roads to follow. We’ve decided that exploring those narrow trails leading towards the shore (and the requisite For Sale sign) will lead to new vistas. Usually you can get turned around at the end without calling for a skyhook, and tourist licence plates explain wanderlust better than any words.

New talent by the sea

The first day of a new week, and the chance to have a face-to-face with a new face from Facebook. Building your community, one step at a time. Also, the chance to catch up on community news. Not much new, but maybe next week. Then, breakfast in Fortune, at the Sheltered Cove Cafe. For a hungry camper, this is as good as it gets in the forenoon
