New talent by the sea
The first day of a new week, and the chance to have a face-to-face with a new face from Facebook. Building your community, one step at a time. Also, the chance to catch up on community news. Not much new, but maybe next week. Then, breakfast in Fortune, at the Sheltered Cove Cafe. For a hungry camper, this is as good as it gets in the forenoon
The afternoon was spent with friends; a chance to meet the new family dog, to do some video editing and electronic troubleshooting. No stress involved. We even made a quick detour down to Basin Head near the end of the afternoon, in response to a chiding remark from one of the kids. Crowded, even at the supper hour.
This evening, we found our way down to the Rock Barra Retreat, located about one kilometre off the main road. We had directions, but it was easier to follow others in. This site served as the main set for the movie “The Ballad Of Jack And Rose” back in 2004, but I’d never come all the way in until this evening. On stage, the featured performers were Island songwriters (and brothers) Robert and Andrew MacIsaac, with two sets of their repertoire. Essentially an unplugged show, although battery-powered amplifiers allowed microphones and some electric guitar work. This site is “off the grid”, so by the end of the concert, with special guests October Browne, Teresa Doyle and Patrick B. on saxophone, the ambient light barely permitted photography. The room was full, and I was surprised at the international flavour of my fellow audience members.
The MacIsaac brothers write from their hearts; there’s no Pop 40 content here. If Jian is reading, they’d love to appear on Q some morning soon. There’s an album “in the works” as they say, so we’ll be hearing more from the duo. Next week, October… We returned to the road by the light of the moon, recalling how things were up here before the electricity came through, two generations ago.
