A celestial observation

Today is the three hundred and fifty-fifth day of the year. An important number, since it matches the number on the front of the city bus that takes me home at the end of an average working day after a slight pause on the university campus. A campus where the odour of learning is omnipresent, as an aside. We are dangerously close to the end of another calendar page, and with remarkable foresight I have already laid in provisions of such pages for the next trip around the sun.

A useful trick

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Probably untrue. Dogs and tricks go well together. It all depends. I am admittedly ambivalent about where the dog and the trick should meet; after all, not all tricks are necessary or useful. Think about it.

Join our domain

Today I was back on the road, doing the tech thing in one of our schools. As the “networked” model takes on increased importance due to our new fibreoptic capabilities, it only makes sense that the computers in our classrooms “join our domain”

Lifeblood of the community

Did you hear, did you hear? Tell me everything my dear! is the cry and response from my favourite off-Broadway musical. The gang from Avonlea are as much a model of society as anything else. After all, when was the last time you covered your ears and ran from those juicy tidbits of news that someone else was offering for the price of your attention?

Just press record

Back about thirty years ago (it sound so much longer when you put it that way) some of my buddies borrowed a piece of gear from the university audiovisual services that showed just how things were changing. Up until then, a movie required investment in time and equipment. The ability to tape two pieces of film together without sending the projector into “spew mode” was not given to all. Here they were, with a “recorder”.

When culture is alien

Tonight the Global network carried the “Canadian Urban Music Awards”, from Toronto I assume. At least, the little video headers showed subway cars with destination plates for Downsview… that sounds sufficiently Queen City to me.

An evening of sound pleasure

Some things are an acquired taste. Some are inborn. My love of a good concert band and choir is a combination. I did my years “in the pit”, and have no regrets other than the single one that my time has passed. Now it’s the time for my children.

I’m not yet convinced I should change the way I see the world

The world of broadcast television is ready for change. The flyers all scream it at me. The aisles at the local big box electronic stores flaunt their wares. Even the Netherlands switched off their analog transmitters this week, now that the digital age has arrived.

Second impressions

Back when summer was at hand, I mentioned that I’d downloaded a new distribution of Linux, and gave my impressions based on a couple of hours with an older computer as the platform. Today, with a bit of free time on my hands, I decided to revisit the Ubuntu community.

Take the long way home

Public transit has one very consistent habit; the bus always takes the same way from point A to point B, unless it doesn’t… happily for those of us who may be (MAY BE) borderline OCD, it generally takes the same way, day after day, on a schedule that is written down in blue and white.
