Sooner or later, every cook runs out of staples. Not the metal variety, because the bindery should be separate from the kitchen. Think basic food groups. This morning, just as my calendar indicated that stuffing the hens was up for an urgent activity, I realized that my larder serves more than me. The house was essentially a rice-free zone.

There are larger worries in the world, but right now the primary one in my near circle is that the crema is missing. I’ve decalcified and degreased and tested and rejected (a half jar of ground beans), but the answer is not clear. What will we do if the machine has developed a mechanical flaw?

Another season and more of the same. The Rouge et Or from Laval University have completed another perfect season this afternoon, winning the provincial championship against Concordia in a close and well-played game. The team is off to the semi-finals next week with yet another chance to go all the way to the national championship. Good stuff.

Our house is fairly well protected. The paper delivery man knows it well; he only tries to collect his due once every calendar month, because the dog is always watching. We have no fear of flooding, now that the city has designed a complicated series of high water deviation canals in the area. The chance of serious hurricane damage is kept at a distance by a continent. Unfortunately, we are not safe from that menace that lies in wait: the dirty oven.

An empty fridge is a great incentive to go out, in the middle of a thunderstorm, and purchase stuff that isn’t exactly necessary for good nutrition. Things like more dishwasher soap and assorted chocolate chip cookies. And don’t forget the cheese. We discovered that milk products are somewhat difficult to store in the context of camping, so good cheddar (or bad cheddar) was soon stricken from the list of essentials during our long time away from humdrum house.

I remember one particular toy with great fondness: the punching bag clown. You lashed out, he went down and then came right back up, without hesitation. This year, our vacation has that aspect. We should have been homeward bound early today, but I’m currently in downtown Halifax. The vacation continues!

We spent the afternoon hanging around the train station, watching the two passenger trains come and go. Only one derailment while we were around, due to an enthusiastic gentleman in the last car, but the crew simply lifted the trucks back on the rails and off they went, down an impossibly steep grade. Son #3 made the trip, and reported new infrastructure. I was too busy chattin’ up the ladies in the waiting room to get on board, but I caught up on all the local news.

Life should include new and exciting experiences, so today we visited a factory outlet store for the first time. I know, I know, for those that live in the industrial heartland, or near an international border, such things are common practice. I am on the Island.

Sometimes we go to a restaurant based purely on the reputation. Location doesn’t really matter (even when you are very hungry and you are standing just in front of the doorway). The menu seems interesting, and the price isn’t an issue, (especially when you are very hungry and you are standing just in front of the door). Besides, at the critical moment, no lineup to form an inpediment is worth a great deal on the grid of the “should we or shouldn’t we?’

We had heard the rumour that a new restaurant was open in Souris, and with the help of a mimeographed map from the tourist bureau, we made our way to the doorstep of La Belle Cloche. International cuisine in a town that used to be the delivery point for spices; everything comes around.
