If I leave the lights off, and sit quietly, I can pretend that I’m in a deep mine. It really is dark around here, in the absence of lamps and moonlight. Enough to make me glad there are little glowbulbs in strategic corners of the house. Early this morning, the others hit the road; off to the gala opening of a microbrewery involving son #2. Now, that doesn’t happen very often. The dog and I are officially in charge of the house. We can choose what to watch (or not) on TV, and eat wise portions of junk food. Chat (for hours) on Skype with “the old gang”, realizing that we are old. No judgement intended; simply an observation.

In a flurry of other activity, I happened to do some comparison shopping today. Online, without the guidance of a seasoned professional. It turns out that getting from “here to there” costs almost double when comparing rail to air. Of course, there’s no need to take of my sneakers, or endure cloud watching from my window, but… Did the landportation firms not get the message? They no longer have a near monopoly on warm seats in chairs.

A day with things to do! Almost too many things, for someone of my august age.
We decided that the local agricultural exposition wouldn’t be complete without our family in the hall. Or rink. Whatever. This fair started a long time ago; in fact, my direct ancestor arrived from Ireland just in time for the first fair, 176 years ago. If he were to teleport back, he wouldn’t be nonplussed. Let’s face it, cakes and vegetables and quilts and other demonstrable treasures from country living don’t mutate. A potato is still a potato.

Finally, a beach day. Or, based on the calendar, a final beach day. In any case, the cars were back and forth throughout the sunny hours, starting with the sunrise. And in case you’re confused, I didn’t go to the beach. No need; I understand the sun and sand thing all too well. In classic literature, the word “desert” creeps into use.

Please pardon the dog; he’s a bit stressed. Something about a full moon and the coyote chorus change him, into a squealing mass of nerves. Not sure if he wants us to challenge the locals for “top of the heap”, or try it himself. In any case, the wind has died, and the rest of us refuse to feed mosquitoes while he makes up his mind. Just move along.

I have great respect for others that are masters of their kitchen. In particular, the people who make biscuits without hesitation, and who never seem to brook failure.

In summer, the meal schedule gets bumped around. Too many other things going on, some days. Lethargy, on others. Happily, there’s always the “take out” option, or as I’ve learned, the exercise in waiting. You park, queue, order, pay, take the precious number tag, and then you wait. That means everyone, including the family dog.

A local version of an alarm clock: a cold dog nose to the armpit. Gets you up and moving. In this case, a quick march up the road and back, to take care of basic needs (on the part of the dog) and give me a chance to “feed” the local mosquitoes. Not nearly as much fun as it sounds. The bugs figured out that the dog was as much a donor as yours truly, and that prompted a little more speed from the chief inspector of roadside odours.

We may need to purchase one of those “Interpreting Dreams” books. How else to fathom my new fascination with cooking TV while the wife shops for a kayak. There’s a message in there, and it might not be as simple as “I need to eat” and “she wants to test our ocean proximity”.

Another bread machine adventure, today. There was a single apple on the counter. Add in a couple of bananas, some flour and supporting chemistry, stir vigourously for five minutes and bake for another one hundred. In the end, the whole was better than the sum of the ingredients. A loaf, which I have sampled and designated as a success. Call it Gestalt food. With a string of success bakes on my list, I can now get expressive.
