Please sing along

Too much time in the car with a dog leads to irrational behavior. Not just a headline from a grocery checkout tabloid. I’m starting to wish the hound had more than two or three needs, or that he would sing along with the radio (some dogs do, I’ve been told).

Satisfied with the towel exchanges

When in doubt, study. And so, with other consideration in play to keep me close to home base, I did. Now, I wonder if my limits are too close to the redline, or 0dB as my textbook calls it.

Helpful host

My sleep periods seem doomed to interruption. This last while, a cold wet nose is the prod that gets me up, and moving. Dog skills. Non-verbal communication. Etc. Last evening, when the “Come, follow me” appeal took place, there was an ulterior motive. The other dog needed to go outside, and our hound was just being a good host. I was touched by it (as well as by the nose).

The quietly optimistic dog

In the news, a woman in Ottawa has complained that the tax people wrongly took some of her money. In related news, that happens to just about everyone I know. The “victim” or “perpetrator” (all in your point of view) admits that she submitted paperwork that had errors.  Songs in the key of life, anyone? I know, an easy to scoff story. Wouldn’t want it to happen to me, etc. Wait until someone slips the real news to this woman; unless she gets much, much richer, she’s going to have this kind of woe almost every year, from now until the year after she checks out. Sorry.

According to the dog

During the period of elections, the level of optimism is impressive. Much like those who purchase lottery tickets, candidates believe. After all, lightning does strike. Someone has to win. Etc. This evening, a different tale.

Fooling the “watch” dog

A birthday ages me. My children’s birthdays age me even more. Simple, really. I don’t see myself getting older, but each year makes the sons that much closer to “full adulthood” with all the responsibilities and penalties attendant. And so, as I celebrate their special moment, I realize that none of us ever get to pull a Benjamin Button. Happy birthday!

In search of a suitable monitor

Two hours. Enough time to confirm that Mr. Cruise is not able to turn a mashup of Top Gun, War of the Worlds and a Bond Girl into a good movie. But, at least with cable, I didn’t have to leave the house.

Give the dog a bone

Time was, we would “give the dog a bone”. There was even a playground song that helped us to remember that this was a normal, healthy reaction to a pet’s needs. Not any more. Somehow, the diet of everyone in the country fell under the heavy hand of commercial interests, and now we get ads on prime time TV to help push their product.

Retelling the Parker-Barrow tale

Dog math. That’s where two increases everything by much more than twice. Something as simple as going outside. A dog does prefer to be on the other side of any given door. Put two dogs together, and you may lose count of the number of times a door has to be opened. Just so you know.

Plugged in

For those times when we have to share the house, by ourselves, the dog and I have come to an unspoken understanding. If I sleep, he sleeps. If I watch TV, he sleeps. If I leave to purchase foodstuffs (such as steak and mushrooms with a side of chocolate pudding), he will stay outside and scare away door-to-door evangelists and roaming squirrels (insignificant difference). If I eat chips, he will (in keeping with the unspoken part of our deal) use his paw to remind me of my duty. That’s about the extent of it. We never argue…
