Anticipating the need to hydrate

It’s Tuesday. What should I fixate on for today?

My water bottle is back in my pack. After a winter (and spring) of not needing to hydrate during the long ride home, the warning is out. Hot weather, only hours away. When the sweat starts, I’ll be ready with some filtered tap water (the cooler is right outside my cubicle). Anywhere: at the bus stop, on the bus, during the six minute walk through the neighbourhood. Go ahead, Gaia. Hit me with your best shot!

Slow drain forecast

There are limits. I don’t like wet feet, or gunk from the bottom of still water. In search of a fresh fish dinner I might have an interest, but when it comes to emptying the pool… strike out the, replace with that… there; feels better.

Bricks from the collapsed privacy barrier

What with the constant incursions into our privacy, perhaps a little paranoia is reasonable. Identity theft, posting of passwords (by the millions), ongoing escalation of “watching” by various government agencies; all bricks from the collapsing wall around our persona.

When you can’t send the kids to their rooms without dessert

When you have thousands of protesters, you can’t act like a parent who has had enough. The threat that you will be sent to your room without dessert isn’t enough. Let’s look at some of the odd reactions we are getting, here in Quebec.

Relative utility and crankiness

There are days where my utility in the workplace is … questionable. Today, the highlight of the afternoon was my verification that the videoconference unit went into standby mode after the requested delay. For the record, the camera did it’s sleepy dance two minutes early. If I hadn’t been there, the question would still remain.

Free doesn’t always mean better

I’m no longer sure that my government has my best interests at heart. Speaking vicariously, of course. I shouldn’t pay attention to declining services, at least until I need them. But today’s story on the CBC website gives me pause.

Same old demands

In the continuing saga of state vs students (local to my jurisdiction), the government has offered up a “new and improved” version of their offer dealing with a hike in tuition. In rebuttal, the accredited (more on that later) student groups have offered “a tuition freeze”. I guess not everyone watches soap advertisements on TV. The student version has a “tried and true / been there and done that” flavour about it.

Forget compromise

I shouldn’t have mentioned that the students were meeting with the government. Less than 40 hours after the start, the train has derailed. Things are back to confrontation without compromise, and we may be facing a long summer of discontent. Before a winter of discontent. Just so you know. Meanwhile, in the ROC (rest of Canada) university is winding down the academic year. Examination period ended last week, and the final marks will be posted real soon now. Life as it should be.

What’s in a name?

What’s in a name? Depends on who is calling, I guess.

When we buy new cars, the last thing on our list is “changing the name”. Ditto for a move to a new place (unless you either discover the site, or have enough cash to swing the local mentality. If you read a book, the name remains the same (although if you write it…) A new member of the family; now it’s time to shake the dice.
