Fair weather friends

Call them “fair weather friends”. They met, about a year or so ago, while out for a walk. Not a quiet walk; rather, a stroll with pots and pans. Nothing to do with cooking, though. A bit of a tintamarre, if you must know. Friends, though, with great intentions for the future. Spring turned into summer, and they hung out, even managed to get on stage together for a song and dance routine. What others call an election.

It’s in the genes

Easily distracted, why, yes I am. All it takes is a bit of political humour. And here in Canada, the distractions are never long in coming. Got a senator to show us “sober second thought”. Right! How about class warfare among those who want to be the ruler of a major political party. Lots of that going on. One day leads to another, and the constant in the equation is that somewhere a politician is acting out. Right, Toronto? Right, Quebec?

Turned down four job offers

They die. They get killed. Today, for the first time in my life, one quit. Holy smoke!

Yes, the Pontiff has announced that he wishes to retire. Given his age (allegedly eighty-five), I agree that he has gone beyond the “Freedom Fifty-five” that certain financial institutions have offered to their congregation. The question remains: What do you do when you are the only retired pope in the world? Hard to join a club, or even get a foursome together for a round of golf. You can stamp collect, I guess. The rare Vatican ones are available at a good price, I bet.

Distracting a dog with a dream

for anyone interested by Canadiana, one TV show in particular takes you down to the sheds, cellars and shelves of the land. I’m a fan of Canadian Pickers. They have deep pockets, an eye for the oddball object and an invitation into places where the rest of us may never get to go.

Hardly the frenzied dance we feared

Today was “Dogcam Day”, and before leaving for the bus, I carefully pointed the camera and checked that things were visible on the phone. How times have changed!

Preparing for some reality TV

I’ve got a blind spot in my life. What does the dog do, all day, when the family is elsewhere? If things go according to plan, I may know, as early as the weekend. One of the webcams that isn’t in service is going to serve as a sentinel. I don’t care if the dog feels uncomfortable; if I can be on cameras in public places, he can be on camera in mine. Just a matter of patience.

Superbowl Sunday as a religious feast

Just heard something worth repeating: “Everyone has a life story to tell”. Keep that in mind, the next time you learn about someone “famous” bumping someone “less so”. Case in point, those that sculpt snow for the Carnaval. Under deadlines imposed by the organizers, as well as those from weather. Yesterday, the competitors were told to lay down their tools and take a break. The site was required for a photo op by Stevie. That taste in your mouth should be one of bile.

Intermittent is worse than broken

From where I sit, there is something worse than broken: intermittent. Go ahead, ask any tech (assuming honesty, as opposed to paid by the hour to determine the problem). The rules seem to bend.

When every problem resembles a protruding nail

The storm watch didn’t fool the school boards. Shrew players in the bus transport poker game, they called the bluff and the day was “as scheduled”. No early holiday. Actually, a good call, because the storm is here, now, (after supper) and there was no apocalyse to complicate getting the yellow limos from door to door.

Waiting for the apocalypse, in whatever form

What to do? On one hand, an impending snow storm. On the other, an impending end of time. With my luck, choice #3 will kick in, and I’ll be at work with a really long ride home on the bus because of one of the other two possibilities. Or both…
