Metrology is my weakness

I think I have a weakness for metrology. Unable to make an accurate measurement, so the analysis is subjective, but I can live with that. As long as I have an accurate clock, and an accurate thermometer, and accurate scales, and an accurate gas gauge, life is good.

Trivia for the family

After skipping the trip to town, this morning, I was under a certain obligation to go out this evening. A trivial obligation, where “the team” continued the tradition of “the win”. Actually, we’re moving into another year without defeat, which is far from trivial.

Those pesky logfiles

There’s no secret here. When you visit a website (any website) you leave traces behind. In technospeak, you are entered into a log file, which allows the interested (usually just diligent system administrators) to tell “from whence came the anonymous visitor”. Gives an address and timestamp. Given the millions and millions of entries generated, 24/7, this amounts to digital noise.

Bland supper

This evening, supper will be fish cakes. Nothing home made; these are the factory model. Even the dog isn’t particularly interested in my choice. Maybe with some butter, and a mustardy sauce, I can turn this into something beyond bland.

No bars, anywhere

Imagine yourself with a cellphone. Now, modify that image… imagine yourself with a cellphone AND no service. Zero bars. Anywhere within easy driving distance. Many in eastern Canada had that dystopian reality, today, after a fibre link was cut in the Montreal area. Turned off service from central Ontario through to the limits of life on the Rock.

Without the proper tools

Over the years, friends have commented on my creative use of hand tools. I guess that most people don’t immediately consider the hand saw, when in need of a screwdriver. It comes from having few options at hand, in a home where repairing things wasn’t a high priority.

Pick a tent and fold

Early for me to be posting, given that the sun is still above the horizon. I realize that the evening will be filled with challenges. Best to get my daily responsibilities in order.

A push and a shove

Perhaps all the “green monster” really needed was a ride in the country. This morning, the man from down the way that understands the infernal combustion engine on small tractors stopped by, trailer in tow. We didn’t waste time with idle chatter; a push and a shove and we loaded the trailer. He headed back to his tools and parts.

Standing room, only

An article posted on the “Wait, you’re joking, right?” channel today: an airline is contemplating the removal of seating from its passenger planes. Translates into “standing room only”, except when things go wrong. Upside down. Sideways in a slide. Perhaps the flight conditions in their world have managed to eradicate turbulence. I checked, and the article is multi-sourced, which means that Air Canada has the idea on their corporate radar by now.

Knowledge, first and foremost

Based on the years I spent fixing other people’s (technical) problems, I realize one fundamental thing. To someone who doesn’t understand the problem (or the underlying technology), anyone who can fix the situation is “a magician”. We depend on that principle to get through the day, in tech support. And by corollary, I know that there are a myriad of areas where I lack even basic knowledge.
