Misdelivery

There’s something about the delivery portion of e-commerce that leaves me perplexed. Given the number of times I have had to deal with “exceptions”, and extrapolated out to the real world; how does anything get delivered? Is it just chance?

Quantifying time

What’s worth more; time or money? An old man may have one perception, an employer another and a youth a third point. This afternoon, I attended a presentation dealing with overtime in the workplace. The whole concept of measuring work as value means that in the corporate setting, time is money.

And their interest quickly faded

On my todo list at work is setting up a pair of display units. Don’t need deteails; just take it that a display with HDMI is required. And, out of more than fifty monitors in the building, not one was suited to the task. Fixed that. Now we have a brand new large monitor, for the tech crew. Good.

On a mission to buy stuff

Some people have really cool jobs. The two lads from Canadian Pickers have a nice van, lots of cash, and an open invitation to explore other people’s stuff (what some call junk, but it’s all in the eye of the beholder). They even get to buy some of that stuff, and carry it home. A great trade: plastic bills in return for just about anything, (as long as it has been pre-owned and comes with a pedigree.) OK, I wouldn’t need as many Coke buttons as they seem to find important, and old oil cans are just that. But some of the other stuff. If I started listing, I’d blow the word budget.

Pedestrians bottlenecking (and rubbernecking)

There’s a new game in town. And in our house. GTA V. After watching for the last half hour or so, I still have no idea what the game objective might be. However, this is not a training film for driver ed.

Inflated dreams

Another assignment submitted. Not as good as I’d like, but it will face peer evaluation. Since none of us know what we’re doing, the received mark will probably even out. I’m unwilling to give more than I’m going to get, in this brave new world of the MOOC. Still, I did have to figure out what was wanted, and how to provide an approximation. That’s part of the learning process. I intend to use the software, after the dust has settled. Worth a lot, in that context.

Little interest in our little market

Oh, how quickly those free hours erode!  Our last scheduled long weekend before mid-December is now just a tick on my calendar. Tomorrow, education begins in earnest, and I’ll have my part to play. Oh, wait… just checked my calendar, and there’s another 3-day pause in mid-October. My optimism level just climbed higher.

Movie plots to teach about inflation

One advantage of getting older is that you’re allowed to watch stuff you missed the first time around. James Bond movies, for example. I was too young (and highly disinterested)  when the early movies had big screen presence. Over the years, the plot lines blurred, and  the music became familiar. And now, thanks to the cable network’s need to fill holiday hours with stuff people might want to see, there’s a marathon underway.

Calculated savings

This morning, following a hint on one of those sites that tries to educate the users of the world, I added a feature to my smartphone. I’m part of Team Android, which is a child of the Google. That should tell you the rest. Yes, Google does know everything. Watching my telephone location show up on a world map, just before the ringtone kicked in: proof that my world is interwoven. I know; at any point I can yank out the battery and go off the grid, but that’s not the point of the exercise. It’s all one. Like something out of a science fiction pulp novel from the last century. And I am powerless.

Striking similarities

The motive of a business is to make a profit. There. Got that out of the way. Let’s move right along, and ask a question. What is the motive of a business owner?
