Chain closure

Hard to decipher the retail sales industry. If I’d been willing to shop in a store that had high prices and chronic lack of inventory, I could have saved those 17,000 jobs at Target! Not a good week for the mall rats. Three major chains announce their intent to close out in Canada, and we’re not Friday yet. Anchor stores, with better than 100 people on payroll. Sadly, once those jobs are gone, there may not be anything to replace them.

The pennies you save…

Whether or not you make regular (or supreme) purchases of refined petroleum product, the headlines are clear. The pennies you save on each litre will be responsible for the decline of the empire.

Spare change

Spare change? Some people take the concept very seriously, and I’m not referring to the man who sits by the gate in the Old City. Somewhere in La-La land, a collector just paid $4.8 million to “own” a penny and a quarter. Sure, the coins were old (and tarnished), but the rarity drove this obviously (too) wealthy individual to continue frantically bidding until the auctioneer did the gavel thing. Please, if I ever get that keen on owning anything, swat me with a gavel!

Fixed at your end

A nod to the person that phoned AND sent an email asking to get in touch with me later in the day, and then didn’t. As someone who hates making reservations for anything, you harden my resolve.

Casting an offer into the stream

I admit to peeking at the flyers. I did check out the early welcome on the website. But, I did NOT go to a single Boxing Day Extravaganza. Groceries don’t count. Nor does a minor purchase on the “Bay”.

On the economics of travel

My urge to travel during the holiday period has diminished greatly. The same social obligation remains, but a combination of weather forecasts and modes of transportation mean that I’m going for FaceTime, instead of face time.

Indexed income

The first reading of the article left me with a “so what” reaction. The government will tax me if I use drugs. Beats going to jail, etc. The second reading revealed something different: the government will tax me (my earnings) if I test drugs. As in, pharmaceutical testing. There goes any dream of a new career as a guinea pig. And it also shows that the government might be in dire financial straits.

Unaffected by the shopping fever

Too old or too poor? Not sure. The whole “Black Friday” excitement just isn’t doing it for me. I’m sure that somebody, somewhere, found something for somebody and saved a tenspot or two. Not me…

Double up on the snow shovels

Paying attention to “the probs” for one part of the continent requires effort. Now, try doing it for two separate areas. That’s my situation. What if we get a snow storm here? Or there? Or in between, in case a road trip gets added to “the sked”. My life, doubly complicated.

The “new” meter man

Based on recent experience (six weeks and counting), there aren’t many folks who knock at the door during the day. When the tock tock came, at lunch time, I answered. A man in an overall with fluo trim, just like the people who climb hydro poles for a living. In fact…
