My virtual farming school

My efforts to learn the basics of agriculture through observation continue. And there has to be a better way to get my imaginary farmer certificate.

Who lives there?

I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. I miss mailboxes with actual names on the sidebar. Used to be, even if you already knew where everyone lived (force of habit and family ties) the box served as a recall. Kept you from showing up on the wrong doorstep. Now, finding where someone lives in the absence of an up-to-date   contact number can turn into an evening of adventure. At least with StreetView you can make an educated guess, but there has to be a better way.

Birds, bees, flowers and trees

Given that our major visual distraction here, other than the ocean, is the bird life, I thought it might be useful to show the relative size between a bird and a common flower. I didn’t realize until today that our warblers  enjoyed the dandelions. Cover, colour, flavour. Here’s a photo for you to visualize things.

Bedazzled by the variety

At this time of year, we have a lot of small birds around the yard. In the trees. On the feeders. Flitting back and forth, from dawn to dusk. And there’s one detail that leaves me wanting to know more. The coloration.

Keeping the cellar dry

Getting my feet wet was never an issue, when I lived in La Vieille Capitale. We were up the hill, and the authorities had provided lots of ditching to keep any river overflow heading down to the sea. But, for many it was an issue. As son #1 starts the search for an eventual dream home, he’s been forwarding realtor listings. Seeking tacit permission from the parents, I guess.

Another season of pointless harvests

It might be the throaty growl of the neighbour’s “zero turn mower”, (a subliminal trigger), or the carefully arranged yellow-on-green foliage, but we are into another season of pointless harvests. The lawn. It takes time to start (blame it on the weather), but suddenly everything is getting taller. And so with a vengeance, things must be placed under the spinning blades of our own yellow-on-green “mean machine”.

A whale of a rumour

Today, the CDC offered a deal to the human race. If you get fully vaccinated, you can stop wearing a mask and start cuddling with others. Not exactly how it was worded, but close enough. However, the second paragraph muddied the waters. You can do these things, but “masks may still be required by state, local, tribal or territorial laws as well as businesses and workplaces.” That takes the air out of their fancy balloon.

Missed my chance at a selfie

I haven’t been to the city in many months. Seems I’ve missed out on getting close to a certain politician. Actually, a statue of a politician, who has a personal bench and seems to get into many selfies. Popular? Not with everyone. There are some who take great glee in adding touches of colour to an otherwise drab pile of bronze. Red paint Is the preferred method.

Cheap flowers and expensive rocks

The following photo proves three things: winter is over, there are flowers in May and even really scrappy ground can support those flowers.

No mow May

Despite the rain, we went for a car ride today. My first, in many weeks. All in the name of medical science; the nearest vaccination clinic available was a two hour round trip, plus another hour spent mainly in queues, or sitting quietly. The actual injection took seconds, and I can brag that it hardly hurt at all.
