Who lives there?

posted in environment, genealogy |

I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. I miss mailboxes with actual names on the sidebar. Used to be, even if you already knew where everyone lived (force of habit and family ties) the box served as a recall. Kept you from showing up on the wrong doorstep. Now, finding where someone lives in the absence of an up-to-date   contact number can turn into an evening of adventure. At least with StreetView you can make an educated guess, but there has to be a better way.

Although I’m not on the “let’s go visit” list for many, and our house is hidden by the trees, we’re still new enough to the area that folks remember the truck delivering our home. I guess. I wasn’t there, and got this news second hand. But in a place where homes can stand for more than a century, and the head of the house has changed with the passing of time, the mailbox is still a good tool. And as I write this, I imagine that someone else, cannier than me, is thinking “Doesn’t he know about the secret community directory?” Well, no I don’t. Feel free to drop off a copy, since you already know where I live.

My actual fear? That I’m going to miss the arrival of the people with a million dollars in an envelope. Ed Somebody. Of course, he probably has that magic list as well. I’m probably the odd one out here. Is anyone listening? family I need to know the identities of my neighbours, in a geographical sense. It’s a genealogy thing.
