Missed my chance at a selfie

posted in environment |

I haven’t been to the city in many months. Seems I’ve missed out on getting close to a certain politician. Actually, a statue of a politician, who has a personal bench and seems to get into many selfies. Popular? Not with everyone. There are some who take great glee in adding touches of colour to an otherwise drab pile of bronze. Red paint Is the preferred method.

Now, cleaning a statue over and over again comes with certain costs, and people (not me, I’ve been away from the area) are questioning if it is money well spent. What if the statue was repurposed? Or simply moved into a storage cupboard? My own experience with statues is that they belong in churches. When the saint is demoted (looking at you, Christopher), just remove him/it from view.

Well, the city fathers (why are there no mothers?) have held a vote, a few hours ago. The statue of the politician will remain, but the comfortable bench for selfies will be redesigned. And an additional figure will be added to the “tableau”, to improve context. Even better, a sign in at least three languages will be brought into the area; tourists really like to read about politicians, when the option of a selfie is no longer available. The city fathers know about such things. Spending too much money, I mean.

Personally, if I had control of the situation, the statue would be melted down into a neat lump of something else. We really shouldn’t give former politicians any more credit than they already have taken. They are employees, not gods. Save the worship for the church, which has a better eye for statues.
