Today was a reunion date, for my dear wife, with a cousin she hadn’t seen in ages. We agreed to get together for breakfast, in what can be termed “neutral territory”, and then stayed put for hours. The poor waitress with her ready smile and coffee pot was close to despair, when we finally left our table just in time for her noontime rush.

Asking other people for advice can give you unexpected responses. Be it over coffee, or over the Internet; today I asked for a scenic road out of Drumheller, and read a comment to “take the first one you find, it doesn’t matter. Just get away!” It wasn’t that bad, from my point of view. Oh sure, the warning sign beside our campsite read “Beware of ticks and snakes”, but that’s just a sign that there are pests.

Once in the Badlands, escape is difficult. Futile, even. We had the main goal of a museum tour, so after a complete home-cooked breakfast, we were off to explore. Let me add, the breakfast was complete, with all the usual proteins, a ration of toast and brewed coffee. Like in a restaurant, but prepared in our own tiny kitchen. The induction stove was a great purchase.

Roadside halt coffee isn’t always good, no matter how many varieties are available. Or so I’ve been told. I had missed that chance to burn my tongue and stayed out in the crisp wind, to allow a quick squeegee of the road dust from the various windows. We’re seeing new things today; wild animals, as yet nameless, and large deposits of “anhydrous sodium sulphate. I think it is used in soap manufacture, and the brilliant white traces are everywhere. I have to wonder about the local water quality . SK continues to be flat and free of any trees larger than shrubbery. Such a pity.

Remove the hills, and the road is suddenly much easier. We left the flatlands of Manitoba behind, today. In exchange, we entered the flatlands of Saskatchewan. In other words, other than the changes in license plates around us, things remained much the same.

As we spend time on the road, we get better at the amenities. This morning, despite the rain, I decided to spend some time in a “rain room”, with soap and a towel. And a razor. The result: I look much more presentable. No photos, however.

I’ve finally seen Superior! Large, wide; an ocean when you are surrounded by trees. I didn’t actually go down and touch the water, but I’ll keep that for a real ocean. Just sayin’.

My exploits as an explorer are very limited. Crossed the border, two or three times. Never left the continent. Even within our sovereign limits, I have done little to further mankind’s knowledge of geography.

With the morning rush period over, we unplugged the van, made a quick stop for bottled fuzzy water and headed off to cross Montreal. Hours of road to get there, and hours to cross, because they’re building a huge bridge AND replacing the Turcot interchange, all at the same time. I don’t know how the regulars handle it, but going in what felt like concentric spirals to go from one side of a city to another isn’t on my fun list.

I have to level with you; when your bed is slanted, the chances of ending up elsewhere on the plane increase dramatically. We didn’t take the time to bring our set of plumb bobs and bubble displays. After all, the vehicle looked level, in the evening light.
