I don’t live on a farm, and my contact with the seasons is rather detached. So much so that my markers for the oncoming of winter include such important details as a) the neighbours now have their snow sticks, b) the “abri Tempo” garages are starting to go up (fewer than in other years) and my personal favourite, c) the pool is closed.

Sunny weather in October is a stimulant for those who must prepare the yard for winter. While standing outside, in shorts and tee, barefoot in my own park, I could only marvel at how wonderful this summer weather feels.

I know I’m not supposed to be obsessive about the weather, but what choice do I have. It seems that I’m doomed to live in winter. We are moving smoothly through our sixth month of snow. We now have as much as we did three weeks ago, despite the word “spring” on all the fashion flyers that end up in the newspaper box. In fact, today was downright unruly, and the day began with something strange and “off the wall”; a power failure.

I’ve decided to try a little bit of continuity in content for this springtime period. About two weeks ago, I posted a pair of pictures taken exactly one year apart. I realized, in digging around, that I had actually covered a six week period last year, while sending messages back to a friend. So, why not try to repeat the same sequence again this year? If I can keep my life scheduled enough to make it to work every day, I can probably handle taking three dated pictures.

There’s an old saying that everyone talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it. I am part of that happy gang; the climate is one of the biggest factors in how we live, if not where. If only we could choose where; because right now, whether or not we can do anything about it, weather or not, I’m jealous.

For the majority (overwhelming) of my fellow citizens, the 17th of March has a St. Patrick connection that is firmly focused on the weather. Yes, the idea of green beer and shamrocks holds a visual aspect, but the reality comes back to one thing; the storm. Be it just before or after, this is the last big moment of winter.

One of “my” online newspapers is carrying an open letter to parents today, explaining a policy decision from yesterday. At least they didn’t dilly-dally on getting the press release out. Allegedly (what a strange word to describe actually) the local school board in a central Ontario area decided to cancel school buses yesterday due to cold weather and blowing snow. For the safety of the students.

If a tree falls in the forest? If the sky is cloudy? At one point I have to stop believing in a certain number of the events of natural science, because the chance of being a witness is statistically low. Meteor showers? Rainy night. Northern lights? Cloudy skies. Total lunar eclipse? Same problem.

Let’s agree on one thing; winter is not yet over. Forget removing the snow tires this weekend because the shop is quiet. Don’t try to hide the shovels under the deck. First of all, the Red Bull Challenge now needs a few good volunteers to clear the track. Second of all, the deck is now in snowshoe territory.
