New boats, ships, whatever…
Less than four hours ago, the government made an announcement that broke with tradition. It made sense. I’m still trying to recover.

I managed to grab some free GIS data this evening, along with some open source software to manipulate the bits and bytes. It doesn’t really matter that I have NO idea what to do with this stuff. Think of it as a new toy. Maybe I’ll learn something useful.

Another general election on the Island, next Monday. Another “first past the pole” model, where the chances of forming a government depend on a party’s ability to field qualified candidates in all ridings. Quite apart from the issues… which is why I remain quietly astonished to discover that there are ridings where “the other parties” didn’t even get someone nominated.

Political campaigns are great fun for the spectator. Whether or not they qualify as bloodsport is another issue, for another time. If there is no election in your local area, seek out the content from other jurisdictions. Live vicariously.

While at coffee this morning, a co-worker mentioned that there was an Asian grocery in town where one could buy the spices necessary for preparation of satay. Fast forward several hours, where the local TV network gave a quick course in preparation of satay. Huh? I awoke this morning, a neophyte. Now all that remains is for me to get busy and prepare, you guessed it… Funny how things evolve.

You don’t have to be a grouchy old man to notice when politicians forget to play by the rules. My kids can tell the difference. A couple of examples.

Arrived home this afternoon to find the house in darkness. Or, at least, as close as you can get in mid-afternoon. A power failure. Notable only because of the rarity – it’s been years since I last had to reset clocks before bedtime. There is no UPS in my universe, so the weather station server took a hissy fit, and required a lobotomy (that’s where you bounce the BIOS battery in and out to force a system reset). Things are running again, but I may have to consider what the next used machine I purchase will be. Perhaps a real server, with multiple drive bays. Hmmm.

Not exactly breakfast fare, but we did get out for a partial family meal before the end of the morning. The restaurant definitely isn’t in the Michelin, but the menu did boast of more than 100 varieties of poutine. For the record, mine involved meat loaf and Italian sauce. It’s become downright difficult to get the whole family together, now that we all have lives involving work, study and play (in varying proportions). Today was an 80% effort: quorum. No decisions were taken, but there were several new pictures for any eventual album.

Proof that politicians are just like real people; the way they insult one another. Today’s local newspaper reported on a series of local confrontations, and for the common man, these were truly common battles.

A tip of my (virtual) hat to the current Parliament. They stayed up through another night and day, debating in that odd “dialogue of the men without ears” that is used in the constitutional monarchy. That is, each side repeats its mantra, and the other pays no attention. Finally, at supper time today, a vote was held.
