Tread with care

We had really good club sandwiches for lunch. Not big news in a world context, but these sandwiches contained properly bacon (hence the name bacon, and not fryon), some BBQ chicken, fresh tomato from a local garden, mayo with olive oil… need I continue? The local restaurants aren’t going to match that sort of fare any time soon.

Searching for a choice of synonyms

Finally! After a lifetime of Westerns (horseback opera), a new twist on a familiar theme. This evening, we watched Cowboys and Aliens. I know, everybody else saw it in a cinema last summer… not me. And now I’m glad that I saw it, albeit on a smaller screen. Not your grandfather’s cowboy flick. No need for Hollywood to go crazy. This one fills a niche in the average video library.

A story told through history

My several and simple years of studying history in high school did not mark me. I can barely remember the when and the where (of my classes), other than by reference to how old I must have been, and in what town my parents lived. Your experience may have been like mine.

More escapism

All that was necessary was a short window of opportunity. And an open window. For the second day in a row, the dog escaped from our family gaol, making a leap to the kind of world a dog dreams of. A park, without a leash or a pack leader. I received the call at work, but realized that my seach resources were limited. And, with the help of a diligent neighbour, the furry rambler was back on home turf before I arrived.

Still waters run deep (still)

As darkness settles in, my toes are tingling. It might have something to do with my standing in a mud puddle, bare feet, for the last few hours. Still trying to move water from there to the other there, without use of magic or a bucket brigade. Might need to resort to that measure tomorrow morning. The pool liner people are still scheduled for the morning, and the water is supposed to be gone. I wonder how many rolls of super absorbent [fill in the brand name here] paper towels might be required?

More than a crossing term

Time for some disambiguation (one of my favourite words). This evening, I’m stuck on the term transit.

Changes in the world, from where I stand

For the record: if you meet up with someone that you haven’t seen in close to a quarter of a century, and the conversation picks up like it was only days ago, that person should be sorted into the friend pile.

Obfuscation

This is not a test. Do you understand everything you read? I enjoy reading, and I do make an effort to “catch the drift” intended by the author. Sometimes, I just can’t catch it… the following text is copied from a news article, so I’m calling fair use. Read the rest of this entry »

Cheap, unfounded advice

Parent. AKA guidance counselor. You see, even though my kids know I don’t do certain jobs, they also accept that I won’t lie. Instead, I take pleasure in using the Socratic method of giving advice. A little bit of opinion, a smidgen of research; the usual.
