Not a trivial group

Just back from an evening of group trivia. Actually, a fun evening, given the depth of knowledge from our pick-up team. I think we tied for the winning position, but I can’t be sure. That’s a sign that we were playing for the fun of the thing, when stats don’t actually matter. And no, I didn’t get into “the wings”, by choice.

Maintained by me

For more than three decades, I lived in my house and accepted that there was a mystery black box in the attic. At least, I think it was black. Never actually saw the unit, much less inside of it. When I activated a certain control on the wall, a fan noise could be heard, and my neighbours mentioned their “air exchanger” with a matter of fact tone. I assumed that it was something more complex than an open door or window.

Protect the berry patch

An eventuality, I’m telling myself; the report from the garden is that we’re under attack. The berries are ready to harvest, if you don’t mind the whitish colour and bitter flavour. Apparently, the hares don’t mind. Or have no mind. Whatever.

Coming from beyond the Pale

The phone rang this morning. A technician from Bell, letting me know that they’d found the reason for our outage in their local equipment building and fixed things. I’m actually happy about such things; it shows that the hardware folk get things done, even when the billing people have no idea about why things suddenly go wonky.

The art of digging a pit

Outside, in that brief time before sunset. No wind. Temperature almost like indoors. Sounds blissful, right? Not quite.

No one small adjustment

I haven’t realized just how difficult the life of a student can be, for a very long time. At a distance from the classroom, I’d forgotten just how many details there can be, for any subject. Couple that with immature filters; on a new subject, the points that are important get lost in the fog.

Junky keys

After spending an afternoon trying to find a “valid” keyboard among the odds and sods I keep around here, I am frustrated. Either the connector was the wrong type, or the batteries were kaput, or the blasted thing was simply intermittent. Doesn’t lead to much productivity.

Creating a feed

Back a decade ago, while camping, I spent some time in conversation with neighbouring tourists from the south. At one point, I was dubbed as a “socialist”. You know, I still wear that label, with pride. The federal government has announced that they intend to revamp the old age pension program. As a socially aware taxpayer, I approve that decision.

Worse than a stopped clock

I don’t like when my clocks are wrong. Stopped, running fast or slow; all the same to me. I have the same feeling for measuring tools that are inaccurate. A light scale, or a short ruler, a pressure gauge that shows too far over or under, all should he consigned to the waste can. When my weather station started to show the temperature “sometimes”, my patience ran short.

In case I need to be a yeoman

While down to the hardware store on a poop run (they sell the stuff by the bag, to enrich the garden to be), I was distracted by the tool selection. And, unable to resist, I brought home yet another implement. In keeping with the quote to turn swords into ploughshares, I’ve decided that should the king call up a citizen army, I have my weapon of choice. Isn’t it awesome?
