Home from the treasure hunt

I feel like I’ve been on a day-long treasure hunt, where around every corner I found something else to bring up my feeling of contentment. Admitting that my satisfaction level isn’t particularly high, I still will look back on today as “a good one”.

Remembering the five cent bar

I’m trying to reconcile my desire to “own” stuff with an allergy to the “fair market value” model. It’s easy to explain with an example; I can remember the five cent chocolate bar.

It’s all about the ADS

My priorities were a little skewed yesterday. While I paid rapt attention to an oddly shaped ball being mishandled by people bigger than myself, a whole other world was in presentation mode. The ads. The ADS. After all, the most important day of the year for those in the creative art world was yesterday.

If you want the contract…

My favourite king of all time is a dude named Canute; he was the monarch that believed he could hold back the tides with his power of kingly command. History fails to report on his rate of success, but I suspect it matches the efforts to discourage telephone solicitors. Not lawyers or barristers, solicitors. Telemarketers. I imagine that if ever a “do not call list” is actually put into place, we’ll still have people phoning at 19h30 to see if we’re interested in being included/removed.

Changing of product line

Since the annual flow of papers that represent my meagre earnings have begun to appear in the mailbox (evil contraption), I’m reminded that I’ll have to produce a declaration for the various levels of government in a few weeks. Much less work than a few years back, due to my decision to trust software. While wandering through the shops recently, I noted the display racks for the latest edition; I also failed to see “my brand” anywhere.

Snow; to be removed

You’re out for a great meal at your local hamburger joint, and the cook offers up the plate with the aside that the meat is not quite cooked, due to a need to save on fuel costs. You’ve been shopping for an umbrella, and the clerk brings to your attention that one of the panels is not covered, because of the need to save on materials. You’ve just purchased a “bus book” but the publisher has included an insert that says three chapters are missing, to save on printing and paper costs.

Time off to recharge

One of the filler pieces on the news this evening pointed out that around here, we spend too long on our break at Christmas. Apparently, two weeks off from “productive activities” is not good for the economy. Other provinces get their noses back to the grindstone with a shorter delay. They’re more closely tuned to the global economy (or at t least that of our economic partners in the paradise south of here. To the purveyors of such patent nonsense, phooey!

When all else fails, bake a cake or two

The first of the primaries is over, and the official race to get in the race to be president is underway. Between now and November, the candidates will spend enough contribution cash  to run a small country. At least it will give the average world citizen something to talk/blog about, and if CNN continues to explain the process, maybe those of us that though democracy was based on the one person one vote ideal will finally understand that it’s all about the money.

Trials and tribulations of certain shopping exploits

I know why I don’t like shopping on “big days”; the crowds, the problems with parking, the errors at the cash register. It turns out that the negative aspects continue even when I don’t go along for the experience. All the details here are hearsay, but the parties involved are fine upstanding citizens of my household so I have no doubt concerning the veracity.

Shopping and coffee too

Yogi (Berra, not Bear) said it best: It ain’t over ’til it’s over. The man did love apostrophes. But the truth is, this Christmas shopping depends on the calendar; until the 26th, we won’t be done. We returned to the mall, and it was still full, and I did purchase some IR LEDs and some LED lights and my “make a whiteboard for the fun of it” is one step closer. Now to find a soldering iron and some burnproofing for the fingertips.
