Changing of product line

posted in economy |

Since the annual flow of papers that represent my meagre earnings have begun to appear in the mailbox (evil contraption), I’m reminded that I’ll have to produce a declaration for the various levels of government in a few weeks. Much less work than a few years back, due to my decision to trust software. While wandering through the shops recently, I noted the display racks for the latest edition; I also failed to see “my brand” anywhere.

I took a few minutes to visit their website this afternoon, where the opening page announced that my trusted software is no longer available. The assets of the firm have been acquired, and they invite me to become a no-less faithful user of another title, sold by their competition in other more prosperous times. I shouldn’t be put off by the doubled price tag, because the new choice (odd term to employ) will be every bit as satisfactory. At twice the price, I certainly hope so.

Now, I do have a choice; I can go back to reading the hundred of pages of guides that come with the paper versions. Note that I produce four returns in two official languages, so I even get a lesson in comparative translation along the way. But, the plug and send process of electronic filing doesn’t raise my blood pressure.  The family appreciates my calm. I think if I ask nicely they’ll simply buy the new software FOR me, and the price won’t matter.

We also happened into a sporting clothes centre that is closing its doors. Lots of coats, shoes, track suits, all lacking in the “wow factor” that another product offered. Here we were, with price tags on the racks. I came “this close” to taking home one of those wonderful wide wooden benches used in selling shoes. You know, the type that lets you sit with all your other bags and boxes stowed behind you, out of way of your feet. At $35, it would be a great edition to some place in the house. Right, honey? Maybe I can head out tomorrow with a strongarmed son and bring one back. They’re solid. Nobody will break it by dancing with the dog on top. Just a thought.
