In one of those “it ain’t over ’til it’s over” moments, I have just applied a patch to my (virtualized) Windows XP system. For those of you who don’t have a longstanding history with Microsoft, that’s the system that ended, in support terms, just over three years ago. An eternity, in OS terms. But, due to a particularly virulent malware that is playing the “give us all your Bitcoin” game with the world, the powers that be decided that even the obsolete systems should get a patch, now. I don’t go on the ‘net with the machine, except for emergencies like this.

Let’s hear it for the signs of spring. Birds reappearing, on schedule. Flowers, popping up of their own accord. OK, in the case of the tulips and croci, there was an initial planting by the resident gardener, but now the autopilot has kicked in. I can see the difference, from day to day. Colour, where there was little before. All good.

Look outside. Not today, too much fog (if this was an airport, etc), but maybe tomorrow. The wind is blowing steadily, and whatever precipitation is falling hasn’t been registering in the rain gauge. Blowing sideways. The dog set the pace for the day, reminding me that naps are good for everything.

With the flood photos flooding in from Ottawa and Montreal and other points uphill from here, I have to admit something. The areas don’t look much like their associated maps.

I miss the good old days. Specifically, that time in my life when today would have meant chocolate, presented in various animal shapes. Today, no ears on offer.

After two full (and wonderful) summers, we’re ready for an upgrade. Standing around, trying to get that vitamin D, we admitted that some lawn furniture might be a good idea. But, what to buy? All of the different models we tried over a thirty year period had major flaws. Rust and a tendency to go airborne.

Unfair! All those hours spent playing Jeopardy; not a single penny extra in my pocket. Is my microphone unplugged, Alex? Goes well with all my unwon lottery jackpots. What do you mean, I have to purchase a ticket first? Is that a rule?

The smoke detector, tripped during meal preparation, is little more than an aggravation. For sure, trying to nap while several of them are “sounding” is futile, but there’s no call for panic. Not so, in the workplace, where alarms are there because they are necessary.

No wonder we don’t equip our soldiers with plastic spring loaded arms. The squirrel chaser we purchased online arrived earlier this week, and broke on the first test. Hard to get beyond that point. Of course, the instructions were clear. Do not try to repair. Do not return to the point of purchase. In other words, thank you for contributing to our bottom line. Signed: Airsoft.
