Unfair to complain about the post office, even if their service is spotty. Today, I received my granola bars. Ordered just over a week ago. And yes, I did receive a warning that the delivery might be delayed. Came all the way from the Prairies… In sharp contrast, my order of Cat-5 cable, ordered just over a week ago, is somewhere between Dieppe and here. Has been for a week now. And the rule is that I can’t complain (passive aggressive posts are permitted, however). I’m trying to imagine how it works in the trenches: do they choose the parcel to be handled based on some Magic 8-ball kept in the postie pocket? Yes, I want my cable, and the granola bars are for nourishment as I reconfigure the home network system.

The calendar reminds me that even summer will end. Already, the panic about school reopening is flooding social media (might be pandemic related). For me, a simple realization. I haven’t been out to do any of the typical seasonal things, yet. No beach time. No camping. No wandering off to get some seafood (came close on that one). When we look back on 2020, will this be the summer that never happened?

Two days ago, I admired the lush field just south of me. A full crop of what I suppose can be referred to as grass gone wild. Today, a very different view.

The current uptick in our fox population might require that I improve my graphing skills. This morning, we had five in the front yard, and a rumour of two more behind the house. All without any interaction on our part. No treats. No siren songs. A dog that is astonished over having new acquaintances.

Yesterday, I was in awe of the fox in the garden. This morning, they were three. No, my camera was not ready, but I suspect they’ll be back. Turns out that it takes a village to raise a fox litter; in this case, the mother was killed in a traffic accident. Two of the litter also suffered the same fate, so the three in hand are technically orphans. I hope they succeeded in the first semester of hunting school.

If not for the dog, I might never know when some of my neighbours stop by. These are quiet neighbours, at least during daylight hours, and they tend to watch me from afar. So, this afternoon, when the dog put on a “song and dance routine”, I stepped outside. There he was, in full vulpine glory. Keeping a low profile beside the garden beds, with an ear tuned to every sound.

My common sense (yes, I have a little) keeps me from chasing storms. If I’m in the area, I’ll watch, but there is no way that I’m going to try and catch the noise. So, while we were out this evening, playing squirrel taxi, I did keep a keen eye on the sky above me. Good chance to admire clouds in very non-intuitive patterns.

Sunscreen, for the BBQ cover. It should be a thing.
When I purchased our (wonderful) BBQ, four years ago, I decided to include a cover. Something to protect against the wind and the rain. And it has. Unfortunately, the sun also shines, and the material seems to have developed holes. Tears, actually. Something akin to those blue jeans that are sold as pre-worn. I tried to bind the wounds, using duct tape, but I can see that the only recourse will be to order a replacement.

In a proper distribution of labour, either the load is shared equally, or the heavier portion falls on the shoulders of the person who wants it. I have a confession: in terms of taking care of our grounds, I am a failure. Abject. However… I do appreciate the effort, and I do notice when things look good. Flowers, for example, are an easy mark. Look.
