Fresh from the oven

With the Reveillon behind us, and a few hours of sleep to reset the body clock, the family is now ready for what Christmas is really concerned about. That is, the big meal at the end of the afternoon. With a couple of decades of experience as a cook instead of a tableplace, I’ve got the show under control.

Further prepared

It is becoming more and more obvious. My role in this whole pageant of the Christ Mass is to make sure the cast is fed, copiously and in variety. My bird surrounded by some potatoes will not suffice.

Needle and no damage done

I’ve got my health insurance for the coming winter. Today is vaccination time, against the nasty flu bug, and if the past three years are any sort of model, I should expect to be healthy all winter long.

Insults and derailments

At some point, the current government in Ottawa must return to the people, and I hope the people will be awake that day. This has been a hard week.

Give thanks while things are good

Another long holiday weekend has come and gone. The supper was well-received and all present found that the turkey was sufficient. No need to send out for Big Macs to round out the meal.

Other than basic black

Today was a first for me. Supper, a barbecue, prepared by the progeny (mine, not the rock band). A barbecue where the meat was not provided in our family standard of basic black.

Much like a drained battery

I’ve been really lucky these last few years. Almost never sick. A slight problem with an eye that has turned out to be an acceptable compromise for now. Overall, the health thing has been on the plus side.

Alternate universe

Taking the time to riffle through the pages of a number of the newer cookbooks here, I have come to the profound belief that these meals are actually evidence of an alternate universe.

The day the coffee dried up

I spend my days with more than fifty other people, and the majority are coffee drinkers. We draw our rations, at 60 cents per, from a machine that is filled on a fairly regular basis with several kilos of beans, and the grind, although not one that would receive a rave review in the press, serves us well. Until.
