With the Reveillon behind us, and a few hours of sleep to reset the body clock, the family is now ready for what Christmas is really concerned about. That is, the big meal at the end of the afternoon. With a couple of decades of experience as a cook instead of a tableplace, I’ve got the show under control.

It is becoming more and more obvious. My role in this whole pageant of the Christ Mass is to make sure the cast is fed, copiously and in variety. My bird surrounded by some potatoes will not suffice.

I’ve got my health insurance for the coming winter. Today is vaccination time, against the nasty flu bug, and if the past three years are any sort of model, I should expect to be healthy all winter long.

I set out to replace our good flashlight this afternoon (the stalwart MagLite has gone “missing in action” to my chagrin) but my departure was late enough that all the box stores had just closed. Mañana.

Today was a first for me. Supper, a barbecue, prepared by the progeny (mine, not the rock band). A barbecue where the meat was not provided in our family standard of basic black.

I’ve been really lucky these last few years. Almost never sick. A slight problem with an eye that has turned out to be an acceptable compromise for now. Overall, the health thing has been on the plus side.

I spend my days with more than fifty other people, and the majority are coffee drinkers. We draw our rations, at 60 cents per, from a machine that is filled on a fairly regular basis with several kilos of beans, and the grind, although not one that would receive a rave review in the press, serves us well.
