As proof that I’m getting used to this polar vortex thing, let me off the following. At lunchtime, even though the windchill knocked the comfort level outside down to -35C, I put on my tuque and mitts. And then I walked across the neighbourhood to purchase some bulk coffee. And then I walked back. No panic. Just an average Canuck doing the summer thing in the depths of winter.

I’m not crying, really. That constant drip from one eye may look like tears, but it’s not quite the same thing.

Part of the holiday paradigm. What do you eat, when the fridge is full and the possibilities are wide? How about that loaf of apple-raisin bread? If not taken in hand, now, it will harden to club status, and the disappointment will be palpable. Or some of the oranges (from last week), before the peel gets thin and the juice goes away? I’m practical.

Proof that the holiday season is here: we are seriously behind on the “task list” at work, and nobody seems to care. If an occasion to chatter idly presents itself, the work ethic suffers a wallop. I realize that it isn’t going to get done before tomorrow at leaving time, and it isn’t that important anyway. People have caught the rumour, and I’m starting to get not so subtle reminders that “this is your last time, isn’t it?” Things like eating pizza with the workgroup in a restaurant…

Robbed! That snow storm should have come earlier, and with more force. Instead; regular duties for all involved. Come on! I don’t intend to stay in school mode for much longer. Unexpected holidays are part of the negotiated package. To be fair, my homework was done, and the pain lasted only a few moments.

One of my eyes attracts a lot more attention than the other. From strangers, mainly. Highly trained strangers. For the last few years, my only real contact with the medical world has been based on an evolving strategy of trying to maintain what (little) vision remains. I’ve been lasered. I’ve been “trabbed”. I’ve even learned to prepare a steady diet of chemical soup. Today, I received the promise of my very own DSAEK.

I’ve been involved with this blogging thing for a lot of days. Closing on three thousand. And I’ve become a bit complacent. I have to dig for content, and my personal involvement is minimal. My tribe is stable.

this morning, I was proud. I could see the big E on the wall. Tiny step, but progress. Still, not enough. Although my salt water rinse will continue, there are other plans for me.

Early this morning, we drove into the city. Traffic was lighter than expected, and we found a parking spot without difficulty. Even my wait in the “present your plastic cards” linup was brief. All in all, a model visit to the clinic. Yes, the waiting room stay was longer than I expected, given that the hospital had set my appointment only twenty-four hours ago, but complaining is highly overrated. More important are the outcomes.

Something to look forward to… the phone call at 08h00 this morning invited me to drop by the hospital tomorrow morning at 08h00. Bring a designated driver, because the laser surgery might leave things blurry (Huh?). I’m actually happy. Our public medicine will take care of you. The delays; let’s not go there. I actually expected this call about three months back. No matter. I’ll be there.
