Sitting and waiting for the celebrating
Part of the holiday paradigm. What do you eat, when the fridge is full and the possibilities are wide? How about that loaf of apple-raisin bread? If not taken in hand, now, it will harden to club status, and the disappointment will be palpable. Or some of the oranges (from last week), before the peel gets thin and the juice goes away? I’m practical.
Today, I decided to apply a firmware upgrade to the photo flash. The website made it sound easy; download, plug in the appropriate cable, hit go and watch. That’s not how it goes, of course. The right cable is a guess. After three different units, the flash was recognized. Before I “ran” the driver update. And that’s against some unwritten rule. I have been through all this, so another computer was pressed into service. Still no joy. Read the instructions. Consult Google. Return to the original computer and try again. Move a missing file (why it would be missing is unclear, still). Try again. And at some point, everything clicks and the update happens and my “once in a lifetime” technical intervention is done.
Don’t pretend that the target population succeeds. All across the continent, flash units trundle along with the original version of the firmware (and nobody cares).
Others, in the extended family, are gathering in small groups to celebrate the holidays. I’m still waiting for my turn in the wrapping room, and wondering at what time the food and confraternity will begin. The loaf of bread has left me wanting more. So much more.
