What to watch?

What should (I/we) watch? That, along with being a great question, describes the current way that the average movie gets chosen. I don’t mean the ones that you watch in a commercial palace, with an ambient odour of fake butter. This is more for those with access to streaming services, at home. Just about everyone.

The cleanup goes on

Right now, the usual bird sounds are masked. A mechanical snarl, which I can hear through shuttered windows. Generically, a chain saw, which has taken the place of the broad axe, from a century ago. Fitting; this was the “storm of the century”.

Y’all come back now

Whe n the economy is driven by tourism, the locals want people to visit. There’s a special refrain, from a classic TV show: “Y’all come back now, y’hear”. We do want people to return. Only, in our current situation, there’s a sotto voce sentiment. Next year.

A scent of self-entitlement

Perhaps this is a moment to dig out the dictionary. Try to see if you can catch the different between “entitled” and “sense of entitlement”. I realize, this is subtle. Related to nuance.

The billing begins

There are those who work for the public good, and there are those who work for profit. As this area recovers from one of the largest natural disasters in my lifetime, I have to point out that private companies are not your friend. Pointing to the public utilities and fuel merchants.

Something better than a guestimate

Knowing “how much remains” is an underrated feature. Doesn’t matter for what. When I wonder if I need milk, I can see the remaining fluid in the jug. When I need to know how much gas is left in the car, I have a dashboard gauge. Really convenient (I one used a random stick on a car, and got it stuck. Not my car, and not convenient). On the BBQ, I can weigh the tank and get a reasonable estimate of remaining run time.

To know when the wind blows

A current political theme is “Build Back Better”. Sometimes, you can’t. Today, the weather station returned to its proper place, high over the back yard. However, the three antenna sustems that were co-located aren’t there yet. Maybe it will the the time to choose somewhee nearby, with less windload. Not today; the sun is at an imappropriate angle for me to do anything other than guess at what I want to do. Besides, the weather station takes priourity.

All the usual comforts of home

A special thankyou to Buddy and friends in their big truck. Over from the Rock. They did some quick magic j  ust before lunch (their time zone) and by the time I was ready for a meal (in my time zone), we had lights and running water and the ‘net. Just like before. Yes, I realize that we were away from civilzed living for only a few days (going on nine, if one is counting) but it felt as if we had fallen into a deep hole and come out in that time before my birth. Photos in colour presented as proof.
