Some communities are simply bigger than others. Not in area, or population, or strategic location (if such a distinction still applies in our post-explorer society). It takes a visit or two and then you realize: this is a big town.

The Rowdyman did very well this evening. Stuck in the middle of a whole gang of the rich and famous, he managed to be the good fellow I know him to be. Himself, with no need to put on airs. Now that his name is on a sidewalk somewhere in Toronto, he put it so well: They’ll be saying, “Look at him walking by his star“.

The polls on the Island closed about three hours ago, and I’ve been an indulgent media junkie ever since. Two, sometimes three web browser windows open, the TV tuned first to Newsworld and then to the streamed feed out of Charlottetown, even a quick look at the Guardian and the definitive PEI blogroll, just to make sure of the details. The people have spoken, and the tide has changed. A new government for the Island, for the next four years and a bit.

The gang at the office came together today. Any time you offer free coffee, donuts and assorted other tasties, the office comes together – it’s a rule. And following the rules of management science, we had a meeting with an agenda, goals and boss monologues. For what it’s worth, there was a rational reason. It was time to discuss emergency measures.

Good thing that I am not a news editor at a top level Canadian daily. It must be really difficult to fill all that white space around the ads on certain days. Like today. A report that certain neigbourhoods in Charlottetown have been invaded by crows, and the city council is searching for a solution.

Late in the summer of 1972, I swung down from the Ocean Limited in Amherst, and collected my trusty Targa bicycle from the baggage car. With a fair portion of my worldly belongings in a huge green knapsack (still in the basement), I mounted my trusty steed and set off for the Island. With sixty kilometers of road and the wind at my back, it was time to turn on my transistor radio and tune in CFCY.

We’re across the bridge, which is a poor replacement for a summer ferry trip. Our hunger led us to Summerside, where our choice of restaurant was closed. In the worst sense; there was no sign of it being open for business at any time of day. Happily, the road to Charlottetown is well marked. We simply went to the other Smitty’s restaurant for a great breakfast with unlimited coffee. Great way to start the day.

CBC aired the first part of a documentary this evening, hosted by Dr. David Suzuki. I don’t often include citations, but this excerpt from the corporate site is a true precis:
