A new way to vote, for me

posted in food, politics |

For someone who favours a “cloak of invisibility”, I’ve had an outstanding social run this last while. Weekly breakfasts with a group, in a public place. Actual visits to other homes, and public performance with a musical instrument, however spontaneous. Much more of this activity and my own children won’t recognize me (although that could also be due to my reluctance to go up where they live.

Even the dog accepts this air of social effort, by sitting in the car for long stretches unattended. Although he did decide to sit in MY seat, today; looked odd to see such a long-nosed passenger on our return from the restaurant.

Speaking of restaurants, my preferred eatery in town may be gone, soon. The property went up for “proposals”, this morning; new tenants might decide to repurpose the space. No more pub steaks with salad, or pan-fried haddock. Puts a cramp in our spontaneous possibilities come meal time, especially when so many other establishments are shuttered for the winter. I can probably survive until spring on my kitchen skills, but all that effort…

Today was remarkable, for one simple reason. I voted… from my laptop in the dining room. PEI has launched a plebiscite, to determine if the voting population can support change in how ballots are considered. Could we move from the tried and abused “first past the post” to something modern – a proportional system, similar to that which serves much of Europe? MY opinion now has been registered, and it was entirely electronic. I received an email (twice) with my personal ID number. Once logged in, the whole thing took a matter of seconds, and no tiny slips of paper were marked.
