The census is a phoenix

posted in ham radio, politics, technology |

This afternoon, I had to spend some time “renewing” metal hardware. The antenna project, for those who need to know. Several dozen small bolts and nuts, placed outside about six years back. Not one of them worth keeping. Corrosion happens, but this was a return to dust. From now on, when I see artefacts in a museum, I’ll have a whole new sense of respect for the original manufacturer.

And given what the market sells, I am using the same quality the second time around. A few years from now, I’ll spend another afternoon, shaking my head as I remove pieces of “not much anymore” with a combination of vise grips and grimaces. However, the sixteen new radial pairs are on the ground. Tomorrow, weather permitting, I’ll spread and staple them in place, all the better to be overgrown come spring.

First real act of our new government: restoration of the long form census. A trivial act, to reverse the damage done. Yes, I know; we now have a hole in our national data, but the point has been made. Stupidity can trample, but eventually common sense will prevail. I’m a believer in the census (disclaimer: worked for the project, a long time ago). No, you can’t “have your privacy violated”, but you can skew the survey validity by stupidity. The just departed gang of twits made that ABUNDANTLY CLEAR.

Moving right along. Another week is pretty much over. I’m still waiting for that pot of gold at  the end of my rainbow. Donations gratefully accepted.
