Finish the show and send them all home

Time to put the cynic’s cap aside and join in a salute of Olympic proportions. After all, there’s more gold here than anywhere.

Today, the story was hockey. Off to a great start, turned our tummy sour with that tie just before the end and then some cheers for Sidney with his overtime salvation of our national pride. Locally, the whole family assembled for wings, pizza, beer for the thirsty and a TV that kept up right there at rinkside. In passing, wasn’t it cool to watch a sporting event where the boards were free of advertising!

A few hours of downtime, and then reassemble for the closing ceremonies. Tonight, the joke was (on) us; the cauldron legs came to the upright position in preparation of landing, and Ms Lemay-Doan had her moment in the spotlight. A good, balanced show; proof that even the unilingual can read phonetically in both official languages. The Russian preview was breathtaking!

Call out the veteran to sing us on home: Neil Young has rarely sounded better.

Of course, with thousands of young people assembled in the same room, the organizers used their best high school “Battle of the Bands” playlist to invite the musical guests. After a (very) short comedic interlude with monologues from William Shatner, Catherine O’Hara and Michael J. Fox, the cameras swung to stage left. On with the show.

Michale Buble and an endless cast of Mountie Wannabees offered the theme. Beavers and moose and flying canoes, with Bottine Souriante as the anonymous musicians. And then, the name talent.

  • Nickelback
  • Avril Lavigne
  • Alanis Morissette
  • Simple Plan
  • Hedley
  • Marie-Mai
  • K-Os

The kids (here) were asking for mercy, wondering how much worse things could get before the parents stopped “rocking and rolling”. We tried to explain that this was done to amuse the assembled multitude, but our explanation rang hollow. After all, how can you expect to upstage the Olympics?
