Tenacity of lichens

ONLY Rex Murphy could turn such a phrase. The current election campaign is halfway through, and his description follows:

Sometimes a great notion

I watched a very funny movie tonight: The 40-Year-Old Virgin starring Catherine Keener from The Ballad Of Jack And Rose.

Maintenance without pain

Today was a maintenance day for software. Microsoft released their version of a patch for the WMF hole, which seems to work. New versions of MediaWiki (1.5.4) and MySQL (5.0.18) are now running and nothing has mysteriously stopped. I even was able to Google my way to resolving an obscure problem involving “php and mb_string”, which might have had some unexpected effect sometime, somewhere, in a galaxy near you.
The whole problem for a person trying to maintain a test server is that you can’t be sure what update will send you back to square one. I had to rewrite my Wiki data from start after one such session. I don’t know how to back up this blog, so it lives a similar, ephemeral existence…

Not all days equal

January 2, 2006 has little to offer in the way of “personal success”. I tried to reconfigure the Motorola print server; it died. I went shopping for light bulbs; all the stores were closed for the holiday. I downloaded 5 CDs worth of SUSE Linux; it couldn’t “see” the existing partitions, so I had to abort before my hard drive was reinitialized.

Moody mood

Today I happened across a site that contained a complete set of Moody Blues lyrics, cover art and liner notes. All were cleanly formatted and the author was philanthropic enough to give full download permissions.  It required just over seven megabytes to have a local copy (although the code still needs to be massaged) so that the bandwidth load is removed for this fine individual.
