Stay in a campground long enough and you’ll find other repeat customers. I’m not always able to pull their names up from the mental Rolodex, but we are creatures of habit. That is, we try to pitch in the same little spot each season. Birds do things in a similar way.

A generation ago, if you saw a piece of broken bottle on the beach, the parent in charge would warn against the danger of cutting off a limb. Now, we sell that same shard as precious jewellry, in shops boasting access to “sea glass”. How times change.

We started the day with a hail and farewell to the family, and then set off to the city to repair a reputation. Seems that my domain (the kind that keeps me enthralled) had been delisted.

Her voice made a believer out of me. The tone rarely varied, but her directions were concise and, to a certain point, worth following.

Reporting the progress of my parcel (note the italics; ownership is an acquired virtue) might not be as exciting as reporting on interplanetary travel, but there’s not much of that going on these days. My parcel is the only show in town. Today, we made the big jump.

As my uncle used to say, “There and back again, all in the same day”. Today was an Official Family Roadtrip Afternoon, the like of which hasn’t been seen hereabouts in a couple of years.
