A few cultural moments

Some busy children seeded the cooking shelter with sparkles this morning. No big deal, but we noticed the artifacts throughout the day. On clothes, skin, the iPhone.  You get the idea.

A fungus in the woods

Several years ago, while following the dog, I ended up in a small copse of softwoods. Due to the combination of light, temperature and wind direction, the bugs were absent. The lack of distraction left me time to look about, and I spotted some wonderfully coloured fungi. Since then, I’ve wanted to return to similar habitat, with a camera. Today, while following the dog, I finally repeated the exercise. Here’s a photo. I don’t know what (yet), but there’s a whole winter ahead to pursue the identification.

Beach day, according to tastes

The dog and I were on sunrise patrol, but the dazzle didn’t occur. No pictures, in consequence. Breakfast was second-class; coffee without cinnamon buns, due to a supply oversight. Which, for the record, won’t be better tomorrow. The store was sold out, and I’m substituting turnovers. Not the same quality, alas.

Waiting for the number to be called

Darkness falls. I’m sitting in the car with the dog, surrounded by my toys. Across the way, hundreds wait for the calling of the right number.  My original intention was to sit with the group and dab in time with the caller, but my conscience (and the lingering heat of the day) came through. The dog profited.

No gold for the spectators

Odd how stuff accumulates in a camping car. Mainly, it shows that our hunter and gatherer buried by the sands of time. Today, when we needed the back seat for passengers other than the dog, we decided to offload into the campground garage; the “luggage”would have blended intold almost any any homeless park. Plastic bags will hold almost anything.

No room at the inn

The inspiration of a sunrise departure by friends set the mood for today. Get up, get out and move on. Breakfast, a real one with three eggs, a variety of prepared meat products and potatoes, followed by a “What now?” moment. How about getting son #3 into university?

A perfect storm of activities

Today presented a perfect storm of activities; after several weeks of living without the need for a schedule, or even a clock, a shock. Yes, we managed, but no, it wasn’t relaxing for the spirit.

The local high wire act

Checking out the neighbours today, radiowise. I’d done the usual groundwork, by looking up the locals in the callsign database. And, there was an anomaly. One address, a cluster of calls.   Time to go and see what their installation had, up, to get on the air.

A less sandy beach

Started the morning with a shouted call to “Rise and shine” from the noisy neighbours who had installed last evening. For what seemed like hours, as they labored to build a shelter over the picnic table in the dark. I wasn’t the target of the reveille, but as someone else put it, “In camping, the walls are thin”. They left before my morning coffee was cold, and when the wind shifted, so did their makeshift shelter. So goes life.

Bragging rights only

I accept that there isn’t  any need to go to town every day. However,  once or twice a week is not in excess. The spirit cries out for  bookstores.  Used and new. A variety of prices and titles.  Friendly owners that believe in customer satisfaction.
