A few cultural moments
Some busy children seeded the cooking shelter with sparkles this morning. No big deal, but we noticed the artifacts throughout the day. On clothes, skin, the iPhone. You get the idea.
With some reticence, we decided to have lunch in Souris, before going up by the lighthouse for the annual Acadian festival. A surfeit of choice, given that the central tenet of the festival includes sampling traditional foods… and we had filled up beforehand. More for the others. I did appreciate watching a traditional taffy pull, in which a large amount of sugar changes form. Reminded me of a documentary about the folding of steel for ancient swords. Too many layers to count. It mught be fun to try at home, but what do you do with hundreds of nuggets of pure calories?
And there was music. Elmer and Peter Chaisson, followed by Elmer and Charity Deagle. I had the chance to ask some questions about guitar cases made from Styrofoam. And as the afternoon progressed, and the wind grew colder, the final draws for doorprizes became an exercise in who would tough it out the longest. No winners in our party.
We did have the chance to meet with a couple of local teachers, who confirmed that supply teachers are a rare and treasured commodity. I’ve already had my life altered a couple of times due to that same chronic condition.
After supper in Naufrage, the dog and I spent about forty minutes checking out the surrounding area. The cliff behind the lighthouse is much higher than I would have suspected.
