The edge of the pile

Do you ever wonder about what happens to materials no longer used by the government? Especially the armed forces? There is an old tradition that the cool stuff gets sold to civilians, to be transformed into fun things. At least, that’s how I was first introduced to the world of amateur radio. An impossible to describe electronic block, after careful poking and prodding, would become a core piece of a radio station.

Home on wheels, explored

Call it focus; having an interest in a particular subject is almost a guarantee that you will find places to explore your interest. We have been living in a “manufactured home” for almost five years. As well, recently, we have placed our faith in a mobile home, with all that implies. Seems normal that this afternoon we ended up in a museum devoted to both topics.

When dollar coins make me loony

At home, heavy traffic involves a spud bin and a car within a window of a minute. In my life experience, those multi-lane parking lots on the autoroutes of Montreal and Toronto are an excess. Today, we crossed Chicago, and my stress levels are off the scale.

Racing the wind

We knew this would feel like a long day. We decided to get across SD and see MN up close;  the temperature staying above 30C reminded us of late July, not the first week of June. At least the vocal reminder that we had crossed the state line sounded welcoming.

Wait until the train goes by

The eventual obligation, when orbiting a major tourist attraction, is to visit. So, in mid-morning, we joined the queue for the parking area, before climbing the stairs to stand in awe of the grandeur before us. Four faces, etched into the granite before I was ever born.

Along the mountainside

Another long road day, but some neat stuff along the way. We left KOA#001 after eggs and coffee, making sure to choose the interstate option in order to better follow along in the Next Exit directory.

In the birthplace of a campground dynasty

On any given day, in our self-contained home on the road, we learn about the limitations. And the pleasures, of course; else, why bother. Today, as we rolled south and east through Montana, I had ample time to note some details.

Lose a bit, win a bit

My visit to a dental clinic, chosen by its important place at the head of an alphabetical list, was fortuitous. I went in, free of expectations and came out “a changed man”. My pain, rooted in the remains of an old root, will now diminish. I will heal! As well, the cost didn’t produce any additional trauma. Thank you, Hope and Angela and Dr.___.

Paused for some R & R

Today, we hit “pause”. Back in Canada, with level parking and all the amenities: laundry, wifi, etc. The doctor had warned me to stay tuned to my body. Any upswing in pain, swelling, etc. would mean coming back for a replay visit, and I’m cool with that. Besides, our next destination involves faces carved on a mountainside, and that shouldn’t be altered by a day off.

A change in trajectory

Waiting overnight for a magical pain cure didn’t work. After checking distances, we left the land of “waiting for things to blow”and wended our way back to the land of the Maple Leaf. A reevaluation of the trip, later this week.
